Roadidendren-The Empress’s New Clothes (album)

UK Hip Hop lyricist Roadidendren took to soundcloud recently to release a first draft of her forthcoming album ‘The Empress’s New Clothes’. The album consists of ten tracks, which will most probably be remixed and remastered in the near future. The album features an array of productions, which quite dreamy, the likes of what would seem to fit in a Walt Disney film, but the production complements Roadidendren’s dreamy delivery, whilst as pointed out in previous reviews, she also draws comparisons to the likes of Lily Allen with her London accent which is more pronounced. The album theme focuses on Roadidendren’s views on the showbiz scene, as she rhymes in such tracks as ‘Poptarts’, ‘Talent Shows’ and ‘Radio’ about ‘poptarts’, the state of the music scene including the charts and the lackluster singles on radio, the lengths that some celebrities will go for fame. Roadidendren does impress me on ‘Talent Shows’ on which she sums up her own perspective of the such shows as X Factor, rhyming about the structure of the show, and with humorous lyricism and funny samples, she mocks the show for its vain attempts to create actual talent.

Roadidendren steps in to her own world on ‘Super Maryo’, which combines musical production with samples of the Super Mario sample, as she lays down some good metaphors, from the use of fairytale characters, Mary Poppins, Harry Potter and Goblins. The track also includes lyrics from Roadidendren rhyming about standing out from others, and also such mind boggling things in the world, as she talks about the likes of Michelle Obama, and making sense of the Superman plot. The lyricism that Roadidendren showcases is fun but yet quite serious and thought-provoking when you really break it down. Roadidendren addresses fanatics on the track ‘Fanatic’, on which she rhymes about obsessive fans, including ones that collect all of the memorabilia to prove they are the most hardcore fan, from those that may turn to stalking, while Roadidendren finds it tragic that these celebrities have big heads from having these fans, who also go on to be brainwashed but yet call others that don’t share the same interest haters.

‘Cool’ is Roadidendren’s observation of societies constant battle to fit in with the latest trends and be cool, from grabbing the latest gadgets, wearing the latest brands. Roadidendren delves in to her mind on ‘Lost My Mind’, the song depicting the scattered, crazy thoughts of Roadidendren, who comes across as having lost the plot. The title track, ‘The Empress’s New Clothes’ features Roadidendren rhyming over a tingling Hip Hop instrumental, as she rhymes about the fairytale lives that celebrities are living in, rhyming about the vanity, false grandeur that they put on, plus she talks about female celebrities wrapped up in their own image, even in their music which is roated excessively on radio. This particular track is Roadidendren exposing showbiz and the media.

As Roadidendren states on the title track, she points and laughs at the rich and famous, especially celebrities who show vanity, and lack in talent perhaps, as well as the media who brainwashes the masses. Roadidendren doesn’t conform, rather looking at the whole tragic affair from outside, observing and delivering her own perspective. Roadidendren does come across at times as just mocking and laughing, but in the end, she is conveying her irritation in aunique way, with outlandish rhymes. Roadidendren is a breathe of fresh air for the UK Hip Hop scene in my opinion, and I think she would also fit in with the mainstream which she pokes fun at, or maybe as Tech N9ne says, let the mainstream go her.
