Akira The Don is here to bring the festivities to you and as ’tis the season, he has released a collection of very lit Christmas music recorded at his Don Studios LA, a festive EP entitled Litmas. Having been living out in California for the past couple of years, Akira The Don may have forgotten how cold it can get back here in the UK, but this collection of productions, inspired by his surroundings in Downtown Los Angeles, and the music he’s been playing in DJ sets the last year, have that wintry feel but lit up by the Hip Hop and Trap influences of the Splash God’s production style.
First up is a version of ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy’, a bass-pounding, heavily trap/electro dance influenced remix. ‘White Christmas’ is ultra-charged with electronic bassline and the haunting yet dreamy melody of White Christmas, a collision of vibes, elegant yet gritty. ‘Last Christmas’ is perhaps a personal favourite, an ambient dance remix of the Wham! Christmas classic, the beat is pumping but not over intrusive or brash, and the synths are a merry addition, a familiar rhythm for any lover or loather of those dreaded Christmas party songs that roll about once a year. ‘A Spaceman Came Traveling’ is yet another familiar tune, originally by Chris de Burgh with synths and ringing bells playing the major role in this version, but the beat can’t be overlooked. A perfect production again, thumping but not over bearing, it has that trap element nevertheless. Both of these final two tracks would be perfect for those cosy nights in under the Christmas tree lights!
