Isaiah Dreads – Lights Turn Green

18-year-old MC Isaiah Dreads, based in Dorset, releases his second mixtape this year, ‘Lights Turn Green’ free of charge. Following on from the last mixtape ‘Nothin But A Mixtape’, Isaiah recruits features from the likes of Saskilla, and Benjamin A.D. two superb talents in both Grime and UK Hip Hop. The mixtape displays Isaiah Dread’s ability to bounce from Rap to Grime and even Reggae. The mixtape kicks off with an incredible remix of Rhymefest and Kanye’s classic Brand New, introducing the mixtape with a bang as he emphasizes everything about him is brand new, and delivering a torrent of punchlines. Isaiah Dread displays slick flows as he re-works the chorus respectively. ‘Imagination’ sees Isaiah spray double time bars on a poignant, heavily piano-led melody and Grime beat pattern as the backdrop, as singer Liv provides overwhelming vocals on the hook. This track features deep lyrics from Isaiah whom imagines what could be of love if he weren’t in the position he is now.
Isaiah links up with Saskilla on the trapesque Grime banger that emphasizes both the artist’s drive and ambition, to channel all of their efforts in to their passion, music. No Plan B, music is the be all and end all. The pair display rapid flows on the trap-come-grime production. Isaiah goes from the Jazz-influenced ”Fall Back’, a fiery Hip Hop track that feature confident lyrics from Isaiah. ‘My Team’ and ‘Work’ are the more out and out Grime cuts on the mixtape, the former featuring lyrics that convey Isaiah’s goal to focus on him alone but also to achieve for his team. The latter is a Grime refix of A$ap Rocky’s ‘Work’, and is an amped up up-tempo grime banger re-iterating that Isaiah puts in work non-stop around the clock. He displays fast-paced flow on the pulsating, jabbing beat. ‘Thankful’ which features Benjamin A.D. and samples ‘People Get Ready’ by The Impressions, giving the two lyricists a soulful Hip Hop ballad drop rhymes on, reflecting on how blessed and thankful they are for an opportunity they were given in the music industry. Benjamin A.D provides a chorus that showcases great singing ability from the rapper, a rather soulful voice from Ben.
This mixtape as a whole does showcase the versatility of Isaiah, and he displays entertaining flows, which enable him to alternate and keep you surprised and expectant at what he is going to come with next. ‘Lights Turn Green’ is filled with Isaiah dreams and passions and is rather humbling from him especially when he reflects on how far he has come in his young career so far. For me and in my opinion, Isaiah could be one to look out for in 2016. Check out the mixtape and download, and also check out the visuals for the title track featuring Saskilla.
