New York Producer Nick Hook has teamed up with UK’s young grime talent Novelist for a rowdy and riotous, electronic bass stomper called ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing’. Along with Nick Hook’s forthcoming album “Relationships”, the song was recorded in-person at his Greenpoint studio, The Space Pit. Novelist sums up the track (and the creative spirit that fuels Relationships as a whole) in his Instagram post about the producer earlier this summer:

“Nick Hook – This man gave me a new outlook on life when I met him in New York at 18 years old when I went out there alone. He reiterated to me that FREEDOM starts in the mind and to do what you want with 100% of your energy. I’ve been taking my own time to understand life guys and I wanna say that the race is not for the swift, but remain to be certain in every thing. At times I’ve not been certain about what I want to do with myself but it’s the wise words of good friends and my bible that keep my mind in the right place. Write your plans on your walls and paper, stick to them and don’t stop till the casket drops. Love!” – Novelist

This energetic and unapologetic riddim encapsulates the mischievous attitude, and untamed creative spirit of Nick Hook. Novelist’s lyrics, and the sound bytes from the London 2011 riots, and the message they represent as well his opinions on the track may well rock the boat of many a listener, but Novelist’s attitude on the song is that he doesn’t care and can’t be told anything by anyone, which goes back to Novelist learning to embrace his freedom and do what he wants, rebelling in a word. The video sees Novelist blacked out and lip syncing the bars, along with scenes of rowdiness and intimidation from Nov, and interspersed with scenes from the riots.
