Tobi Sunmola has dropped the final single from the forthcoming EP “City Of Dreams”, out on 24th November. The title track, which premiered on Dummy Magazine this week, displays a full range of talents from the Manchester-raised, African-born artist Tobi, who has so far had great radio support that includes Beats 1, Huw Stephens on Radio 1 and Twin b on BBC Radio 1Xtra, as well as performing a standout set at this year’s Mobo Unsung Tour alongside some awesome Manchester talents.
‘City Of Dreams’ features intricate, in-depth lyricism from Tobi Sunmola, on a Hip Hop beat with an atmospheric, funky undertone. Tobi, who’s unorthodox in his approach to music, explores themes of love, society and religion on this track, rhyming about love and hate in a the city of dreams, his home city, where you either live or die for what you love. The truth is also in between the lines, as it were, as the chorus states not to believe what you read in the news.
The depth of this song and Tobi as and artist amazing. Containing introspective, thought-provoking lyricism from Tobi, he sings as well on the chorus, smoothly sung in contrast to the gritty delivery of his rhymes. The beat itself possesses rhythmic synths and percussion that is up-tempo, but dips in and out of ambient undertones, arriving at the end, when intense, grungy guitar riffs kick in to play. The song-writing is impeccable too, from the arrangement of the verses, chorus, and even a bridge/break in the song.
Having moved from Nigeria to Manchester at the age of ten, Tobi would attend his local youth centre studio where he developed his passion for music. Growing up in and around Manchester’s close-knit music community, Sunmola gained support from the Metro and Manchester Evening News, both identifying his potential. He was named as MOBO’s ‘One To Watch’, and now has been championed by Huw Stephens and Mistajam on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra. Complex, Flavour Magazine and Lost Culture have also written about his ‘stunning versatility’ online. Tobi topped these successes with a performance at Radio 1’s Big Weekend in 2016, and is now working in the studio with Joe Hertz, Bipolar Sunshine, Wretch 32 and Jacob Banks.
