The protoge of legendary Hip Hop producer DJ Premier, Torii Wolf has unveiled the music video for her latest single ‘Pain Killer’, produced by Mike Zombie and taken from her forthcoming debut album ”Flow Riiot”, out for pre-order and a release date of 29.9.2017.
The very artisitic, compelling visuals portray the pain and anguish that Torii conveys and sings about in the song. Talking about the song, Torii says, “If anyone has ever had any substance abuse problems, or has used in the past at all, you feel this feeling of needing something, this dependency on getting high and these drugs, so to speak, are what we need so badly; end up turning on us,” Torii commented to Billboard. “They don’t care about us is what it feels like, you use them too much, it ends up biting you and hurting you either way. You need to get high and the only thing that can get you high is that drug and sometimes you’re high and it still doesn’t feel good anymore. And the same thing with a person—some relationships feel that way.”
Mike Zombie provides Torii Wolf with an intense electronic production, with soft, mellowing piano keys and scratchy, screamy fx that make the song sound that much more painful. Giving the feeling of drowning, or slipping deeper in to a state of pain and hurt. Torii’s vocals, soft and raspy, combines terrifically with the ambience of the instrumental, creeping over the beat.
Thanks to her sultry voice, range and musicality, Torii is rising fast. In the lead up to her solo debut album, Torii has already premiered music with Pitchfork, Complex, Pigeons & Planes, Mass Appeal, Vibe & Okayplayer and been tapped for Vevo’s “dscvr” series (past alumni include Sam Smith, Alessia Cara, Tove Lo, Hozier & DNCE).
Earning the respect of an iconic producer, whose behind some of the most classic songs and projects, Torii Wolf has DJ Premier manning the boards, over-seeing the majority of the album. That is making history, considering that he has produced some of the most iconic female artists Janet Jackson, Macy Gray, Neneh Cherry & Christina Aguilera, but only now has he taken it upon himself to take the reigns and produce the bulk of the material, and serve as executive producer.
Before”Flow Riiot” is released on 9-29, Torii premiered the video for, “Pain Killer,” with Billboard, who also did an in-depth feature with her on what it’s like working with DJ Premier and some of the past struggles she has endured that would ultimately end up influencing the creation of “Pain Killer.” She also went on Sway in the Morning for an interview with Sway, Tracey G and Heather B, along with DJ Premier.
Torii Wolf’s debut solo debut album, Flow Riiot, will be released on 9-29-17 via DJ Premier’s TTT (To The Top) imprint. Watch Torii Wolf’s “Pain Killer” video below, and leave your feedback in the comments.
