Wiyaala is a Ghanaian songstress often compared to Angelique Kidjo and Grace Jones, and she has just dropped a brand new video for ‘Kandibanye (Had I Known)’ which is taken from the album self titled album “Wiyaala” released on 14/11/2014. Not only has she unveiled her new single, but Wiyaala has taken a brave step in creating a new annual music festival in the remote town of Wa in the Upper West Region, set to take place on the 23rd of December.
Known as the Djimba World Music Festival, the singer aka, the “Young Lioness of Africa” says: “I grew up in the region and it is very under represented. By starting the festival, I hope to shine a light on the music and art that exists in this part of Africa. The north has a wealth of talent which is just not getting seen or heard. The festival is one of a number of steps I’m taking to encourage our musicians to showcase their talent to the world and to attract visitors to come and experience our unique way of life”.
The world music artist and “effervescent” singer, who is due to release her second album next year, was inspired to start the festival following performances at festivals in Europe including the world famous WOMAD Arts festival. “Glastonbury started with an audience of just 1500 people and I don’t see why we can’t manage at least that number and grow in years to come”.
Motivated and ambitious, Wiyaala will take her own music like the new single ‘Kandibanye’, a rhythmic and mesmerising song indeed, as well as helping to spread the musical talents of all of those that will take to the stage to the world. It’s the kind of positive movement, unity and togetherness that a lot of industry people in the music showbiz lack, not letting to many in to your circle, but Wiyaala is sharing her platform with other musicians.
