Jigsaw – Play The Game
London MC Jigsaw took to bandcamp recently to release a brand new mixtape called ‘Play The Game’. The mixtape features the likes of MSL, Dpart, Vader, Voltage, Harry Shotta, Brotherhood and many more. The production on the mixtape is more or less 140bpm Grime, Trap and Rap, with much being bass pounding beats, with some incorporating orchestral instruments and heavy percussion. Much of the mixtape features lyricism from Jigsaw observing those around him and the situations going on current times in the city. Taking for instance, the opening track ‘Beware’, with Jigsaw spitting sick lyricism, but which also depicts the state of the community in which Jigsaw and many others in the UK come from, as he rhymes about poverty, drugs and crime, and stressing the desperation to escape the clutches. ‘Story Of A Soldier’ is another track in the same vain, and which drives home some of the pettiness that leads to some losing their lives in the ‘jungle’ which is ‘messed up’. Lev G and Jigsaw express their hate for the feds on ‘All I See’, rhyming about the world which is going ‘crazy’, speaking on drugs and guns which Jigsaw states in not so many words, rather as a rhetorical question, that they weren’t put on the streets by us but by higher powers, and they rhyme about the fact that we are being kept down and made to adhere to the system, losing our freedom of speech.
Through all of this madness that Jigsaw experiences, the outcome is craziness, in which Jigsaw feels he needs medical attention, hence ‘Insomnia’, a track which Jigsaw rhymes about sleepless nights bought on by stress, needing therapy as he speaks to an imaginary doctor in which to free his mind. ‘Virus’ features a hook in which Jigsaw states he needs medical help, as he kills fake gangstas on track, hose concerned with who is the hardest on road, or who brandishing their supposed wealth by sporting materialistic things such as designer gear. Nevertheless, without a doubt, Jigsaw is probably the hardest out of the lot because of his deadly lyricism as he lyrically slaughters and pars off those guys. ‘Wannabe MC’s’ is a Grime banger featuring Vader of Invasion Alert, Slickzz and Voltage, with the three displaying rapid flows and ferocious lyricism, as they too par wannabe mc’s.
Another mind frame that Jigsaw sets himself in to on the mixtape is determination, perseverance, and the motivation to achieve his goals and dreams no matter what. ‘Face In The Crowd’ sees Jigsaw spit over orchestral trap production, displaying an unstoppable attitude towards music and where he wants to go, as well as possessing the drive to continue on a journey to stardom, and yet while he seems like another face in the crowd right now, it is all set to change. MSL and Dpart feature on ‘Ones To Watch’, featuring motivational lyricism from the trio, chronicling their constant grind as they push to get their music heard by the masses, ignoring the doubters and critics, with MSL sorting out the realist from the liars and fakes too. ‘Look And Observe’ is with Harry Shotta and Brotherhood and is another Grime-orientated producton, and emphasizes the had work and foundations laid in the music scene by these artists who are tired of being ignored and are now hungry for success.
The lyricism, song structure and song craft on the mixtape are superb, next to nothing, and the up-tempo, sometimes energetic instrumentals sometimes bring out the rapid delivery from Jigsaw and his features, and Jigsaw keeps your attention with compelling lyrical stories in some tracks, and portraying real lyrics that many can relate to.
