Matty P – The Curse EP
‘The Curse’ is the brand new EP by Mansfield Rapper Matty P, featuring fellow rapper T-Truth and Singer Rachel Diggs, consisting of five Hip Hop tracks, two of which blend both Rap and Rock. Matty P injects a lot of anger and emotions of sadness and his feelings in to this project, with such tracks as ‘Father’ and ‘Won’t Run’, which both depict fatherhood from different perspectives. ‘Father’ deals with Matty P’s anger at the absence of his own father, as Matty delivers dark lyricism, fantasizing about getting his own twisted revenge on his dad. Where as ‘Won’t Run’, a rock-infused production features Matty P declare his love for his own kid, stating his intentions to face up to responsibility, righting the wrongs of his father and being a man. Matty P who is accustomed to dark, crazy lyrical content, is joined by T-Truth for ‘Don’t Give A Sh!t’. which features a well written hook which emphasizes the disproportions of the world today, turning both of them towards rebellion, with Matty P spitting bars which deal with suicide and drug use. Matty P continues the shock value on ‘Annoyed Android’, as he also bats down the critics, namely his own mother who only had low expectations for him, as he rises above and proves her wrong with strong flows and wicked lyricism. Singer Rachel Diggs features on the second Rock-infused track, ‘Hands Of Time’, lending her fab voice, which with the instrumental, adds the Rock vibe. This track depicts the rollercoaster ride, the ups and downs that you face in life, as Matty rhymes about close relationships amongst other things, and having to let go. Matty P delivers five well thought out tracks, with the EP possessing a running theme, whilst Matty P keeps it real and opens up with heart-felt lyricism, sometimes blunt, and sometimes profane, but depicts his own stark reality. Matty P’s lyrical skill is in no doubt, but in my opinion, his flow needs improvement, as with most of the tracks, he seems to be sticking to the beat, and whilst listening, I so desperately wanted him to let loose with the flow. There are glimmers of brilliance on tracks such as ‘Don’t Give A Sh!t’, and ‘Annoyed Android’, where he does manage to switch up the flow. Another positive is that the production is crisp quality, and ties the album together nicely, being the right sound, and complementing Matty P’s rhyme style and lyrical content.
