Sheffield-based collective Clubs & Spades, consisting of rappers Matic Mouth and Shinobi, and Andy Nicholson, formerly of Arctic Monkeys, and Manakin, both producers, are back with a new E.P called ‘Deal Or No Deal’. The title track features pounding production, with the two vocalists rhyming over a lively melody consisting of horns, the lyrics delving in to the stressful lives of the artists and the toll it has taken, while expressing their love for music yet striving and struggling to keep up above water in their circumstances. Both juggle their flows effortlessly on the beat. Island Records’ Tom Prior joins Clubs & Spades for a collaboration on ‘Clearer Coast’ which serves as C & S’ new single, coming out on 12th July 2015. Andy and Jamie Shield produce a jangling Hip Hop instrumental, fusing elements of Hip Hop with Punk, noting the live drums, and Funk, the bassline. Both Matic Mouth and Shinobi rhyme about the silliness that occurs when it comes to breaking up a relationship, whilst not putting all of the blame on the partner, they both consciously express that the fighting is tiresome. Tom Prior delivers a fantastic chorus of epic proportions, possessing a soulful singing voice, reaching high notes and putting conviction in to the delivery as you feel the emotion. The last track is called ‘Ego’, and starting with an ambient, holy undertone, it kicks in to a a reverberating bass and thrashing drum rolls, going in with all natural rhyme skills as they give a metaphorical back slap to many rappers egos as they spit humble lyrics that take you in to their own lives where they are trying to make an earnest living, balancing reality with their music aspirations, coming across as two guys with all of the hunger and lyrical prowess. Matic Mouth and Shinobi also go in on this tune with on point flows and rough and rugged delivery.
