Wrekonize & Sharpsound – Sunny Winter 2

Wrekonize releases the sequel to “Sunny Winter”, just over a year after the last instalment. “Sunny Winter 2” is a come together of Wrekonize’s smooth vocals and infectious flows with the production of of his good friend and Producer/DJ extraordinaire Sharpsound. Wrekonize takes you on a “somber and soulful journey through those wintery vibes”, kicking off with aptly named Wintro ‘Laid Down Again’ and ‘Vibin’, The former features rhymes from Wrek as he seemingly spits about the life of a musician from his perspective and how he takes an easy life for granted. Wrekonize reveals how he gets his vibes, chilling and drinking and hanging with women. Both of these tracks share the same similar sound, with trapesque beats and spacey melodies that leave you like you’re floating, and Wrekonize chops it up effortlessly with rapid flows.
“Sunny Winter 2” also injects “stabs of sunshine” as you can expect from a couple of Miami natives. The production really makes this mixtape as it sets the vibe, and ‘Hydroplane’s production is a lift from the previous tracks, with an almost 70’s funk/groove feel a new school twist, and on which Wrekonize delivers a soothingly sung chorus, shooting in to stabbing flows that hit rapidly. The song is a metaphor for Wrek inviting you to come and party with him and his peeps and the mood that is set. With Hydroplane relying on synths and keys, that live instrument element is re-introduced on ‘Vertigo’, with Wrek slowing down the vibes on a soulful mix of light keys, a synthesized riff and groovy drums. Wrekonize rhymes about his problems with friends, sometimes due to pettiness. The production for ‘I.OD’ is like splashes of lashing drums, kicks and yet another infectious groovy melody. Wrek provides singing vocals through out, the lyrics conveying his urge to OD, but certain lyrics depict Wrekonize’s battle to climb out of this state of mind.
Wrekonize, the wordsmith that he is, serves up many metaphors and clever wordplay for the listener to digest, as well as hitting you with the flows that glide along smoothly on each of the beats. Sharpsound does incredibly well with the production, successfully capturing the winter vibes but mixing it up with a “feel good”, sunshine mood. Interestingly, when Wrekonize sings is when you feel the warmth more than anything, whereas the first two tracks on the mixtape are more ambient, spacious, giving you a winter chill.
