Makola – Black Man Statues

Following the release of their afro-funk bomb ‘This Is London’ earlier in the summer, East London duo Makola have returned with a politically charged single ‘Black Man Statues’, which is due for release on 25th November. The second single from the Finnish/Ghanaian/E London duo, it fuses elements of Grime, Afro and Hip Hop, with Rapper K Mensah drops some sharp, urban conscious lyrics over the rhythmic production by Pete H, consisting of thunderous basslines and triumphant horns, as he talks on the politics that shrouds the city and the culture that is rife. K Mensah delivers some powerful lyrics like ‘this is the fashion capital, white kids move with a black man attitude’, strong and resounding, yet empowering at a significant time in black culture in Britain, as Historic England’s recent move was to give three new black history listing to statues, a sign that the voice of black people in Britain is beginning to be heard. The exact reason for the song being made was because “It is important that in history books to come, every flavour of culture given to this planet is represented and remembered. We are all black man statues.” Lines like the latter give the song and urban edginess whilst the whole song embodies the gritty side of London, with K Mensah using juxtaposition in calling it both a ‘poison chalice’ and ‘a wonderland’. Makola have already gained support from Radio 1’s DJ Target, Mistajam, Phil Taggart and Beats 1 DJ Julie Adenuga who hailed their debut single ‘This is London’ as one of her ‘’tracks of the summer’’, adding it to her ‘Big 3’, as well as it being on Apple Music UK’s ‘A-list tracks of the week’. With new single ‘Black Man Statues’, Makola look set to cement themselves in the British Music scene with this powerful single. They play their debut live show on 25th November at Camden’s Koko and with a third single lined up for January, they look to be hurtling in to 2017 with a purpose.
