Jasper Sommer – An Eye for the Winter
From the sprawling peaks of Derbyshire comes electronic music that you would have least expected, and the producer bringing with him this new wave of electronic music is Jasper Sommer with the ‘An Eye for the Winter’ EP. Jasper Sommer is on the notorious PushCrayons roster along with Kojey Radical, and “is intent on hypnotising listeners with new sounds, ideas and plans in order to “make the world a better place”. Jasper draws inspiration from his idealistic views and influences such as Zodiac (Jeremy Rose), Burial, Flying Lotus,Kid Cudi, Nicodxmvs, Friendships and more to “produce rhythmic messages of mesmerising melodies and electronic vibes that fit in today’s ever changing society”. Jasper Sommer even quotes the late Tupac Shakur, speaking on change he says “Just as Tupac said “I’m not saying I’m gonna change the world, but I guarantee that I will spark the brain that will change the world.” That’s my goal.”
Jasper Sommer possesses a Utopian esque vision in his mind when producing his music, a channel for his angst on 99% for instance, a dark, futuristic trap beat with a booming bassline, menacing synths, jangling keys and percussion. With a dystopian feel to it Jasper explains the idea behind the beat;
“After seeing the videos of Alton Sterling & Philando Castile police shootings I became angry and frustrated, but being a white guy in the UK I felt helpless, the only thing I can do is share the truth and educate other whites on the matter at hand. We live in a time where white supremacy and white privilege is still a huge problem and if you can’t see that you’re blind. The 1% white supremacists don’t want us (the 99%) to know that black DNA is the oldest and strongest human DNA.”
Jasper bases his music on cycles and balances such as seasons, life and death, love and heartbreak on his new EP An Eye For The Winter, which is filled with varying syncopated beats and angelic harmonies, and a sound that acts as his ever-changing mood ring, and he channels his personal experiences with depression, on last track ‘Come & Go’ for instance which features vulnerable lyrics detailing his fight with mental health. “We try to fight, until we own the night”, stating “We try to fight our fears, depression, or whatever it issues until we own our brain/thoughts and regain the ability to be our best”. This one is another dark but yet haunting, echoing and ambient production from Jasper Sommer.
For change you need revolution, and this EP makes it clear of that with the opening production, ‘Huntress Wizard’, an up-tempo, drum riddled beat with busy vocal samples that sound riotous, along with marching, beating production. This is followed up by ‘See u O’ which consists of haunting and ambient vocal samples and synths, is scattered with hi-hats and slapping drums.
Fuelled by his emotions, Jasper Sommer’s music may speak volumes and kick-start a revolution or very well be the soundtrack to it. You are invited by the producer on a ride as a passenger to take in the creative sounds of Jasper Sommer on An Eye For The Winter EP. Are you gonna be the 99% that stands and rises up to the 1%?
