Ironik – Truth Be Told
Almost a decade after the release of his debut top 10 album ”No Point In Wasting Tears”, pioneering DJ and rapper Ironik, formerly DJ Ironik, is back with a new studio album entitled ”Truth Be Told”. Featuring lead single ‘Tuff’, a collaboration with Rap Royalty Snoop Dogg, which premiered on Mistajam’s BBC Radio 1Xtra show, Ironik spoke of ”Truth Be Told”, “it’s definitely my best work to date. I’ve been all over the world in the last two years DJ’ing in countries like Dubai, Japan and all over Europe and its undoubtedly inspired my music but there’s no place like home and whilst I reflect the influences I’ve had, the album remains a testament to being UK and homegrown.”
Having revealed the tracklist via Instagram, both fans and critics alike were teased with the forthcoming release that features an impressive array of artists. These include Fekky and Big Tobz, who feature on harder-edged rap laced tracks, ‘Icey’ and ‘Like Dat’ resepcetively. The two collaborate with Ironik to bring deeper lyricism and thought provocation.
On the other hand, tracks like ‘Wanna Know’ featuring Paigey Cakey provide a softer, “sweeter R&B vibe that Ironik has always twisted his influences around.” The summery vibes of the production are owed to the steel pan instruments used and rhythmic beat pattern, influenced by Afrobeats perhaps, and it explores the complicated relationship between a guy and a girl that are in the process of realising their love for each other. Ayo Beatz teams up with Ironik on two tracks, both as a rapper and producer, first on a remix of ‘Mercy’, a Afrobeat/Rap version of Diana King’s Shy Guy, featuring catchy flows from Ayo, King and Clue. The second song is ‘Watch Nuttin’, yet another tracks that brings the summer vibes, superbly delivered lyrics and infectious flows from Ironik with a melodic, catchy hook from Ayo Beatz. Newcomer Gambimi lays down a soulful vocal on the smooth and sexy ‘Dancing’.
Also worth a mention is ‘VIP’ feautirng Doctor, an anthemic banger with another brilliantly wrote hook, delivered by Doctor, that will have everyone listening singing along. Ironik drops rhymes that bring to life the VIP lifestyle that he lives, only inviting his close friends and the ladies.
Not to forget ‘Tuff’, the powerhouse first single from the album, a trap-influenced banger from Ironik and Snoop Dogg, epitomizing both where they are coming from, where they are heading or are at, and also represents the grind that both are putting in to make their dreams a reality.
Delving in to his latest chapter in music, the album features a wealth of homegrown UK talents such as Paigey Cakey, Fekky, Big Tobz, Ayo Beatz and many more. ”Truth Be Told” is an exploration of Ironik’s growth and maturity as an artist. It conveys an honest and open account of his years and battles within the music scene.
Starting out DJ’ing at age 13 at his uncle Steve Gordon’s TwiceasNice parties, he went on to support So Solid Crew on their UK tour. Producing for various artists by the age of 16, he soon to shot fame at 19 years old, as a DJ and Producer, working with the likes of Tinie Tempah and Chip. His debut as an artist came with the release of ‘So Nice’, featured on seminal music station Channel U. The video remained in the top 3 requested records for a huge 20 weeks, a sign of bigger things to come for the North London rapper. Ironik was taken under the wing of the Grime scene, regardless of his music often portraying a softer edge in comparison to other artists. Infusing R&B, Hip Hop and UK Garage, this was something that resonated with music lovers, and that couldn’t be more true that with the release of his second release, ‘Stay With Me’, which landed him a number 5 official chart position, and from there on, his successes grew, resulting in a further top 5 single, one top 10 single, a top 10 album, and over a million record sales. Like so many of his peers, early successes came at both a personal cost and a professional one too. The young star was stabbed close to his home forcing Ironik to withdraw from the scene and the limelight and it is only now, through his music, that he has found solace and is now able to openly look back on, and share, his journey.
