Ben Ridley – Mad Boy Sad Boy
It’s been a while since we heard from Ben Ridley, but late last year, he dropped a new project, and EP of 8 tracks entitled ‘Mad Boy Sad Boy’, which is now available for stream and download on all major platforms. As always with Ben Ridley’s music in the past, this project portrays various emotions and explores many themes, as Ben goes from introspective, to political, to raging, wavey, and then to motivational and back, remaining in character of the Mad Boy Sad Boy, brought to life in four shorts adverts released via Ben Ridley’s Youtube.
The production through out is hard hitting from the outset. The opening track ‘God Doesn’t Love Me’ features heart-felt lyrics from Ben as he details his home life, background story, and revealing how he feels about his situation. An emotional portrayal, Ben is relatable from the off. ‘DARK’ is another harsh exploration of Ben’s upbringing, and also, like the previous track, touches upon religion, with Ben feeling the darkness more than the light.
‘Made A K” and ‘FLIP’ are two trap bangers, featuring vocals from Ben on cold and hypnotic production, as he talks of getting paid from various hustles, a testament to his hunger as a go-getter to succeed.
‘Breeze’ is all about Ben Ridley facing his demons head on, and as he states on the following track ‘Adrenaline’, he uses marijuana to block out negative thoughts. The latter of the tracks features Ben in a more positive mind state, preferring to ignore the negativity and ‘get it in’. ‘God Is A Girl (16)’ features lyrics from Ben, on a murky trap beat, rhyming about needing love and affection, yet he reveals the mistakes he’s made in certain relationships, feeling remorse for his actions or decisions. ‘Exhausted’ is the final song on the ‘Mad Boy Sad Boy’ project, and is a culmination of of all of the obstacles life has thrown at Ben, relationships with girlfriends, with his family, the stress becoming too much, driving him to exhaustion, and to alcohol and drug use.
What Ben Ridley is doing with this project is searching deep within himself and revealing his flaws, his imperfections, some of those things that many of us could maybe relate to. Ben’s stories are intriguing and heart-felt, with the vibe of the production reflecting the harshness of the lyrics.
