ABSORB – Coping Mechanisms, Missions, and Bad Decisions
ABSORB returns with his much anticipated new release, the Coping Mechanisms, Missions, and Bad Decisions EP. ABSORB is a versatile MC with a passion for bass music, grime, dubstep and electronic music, and has previously worked with No Lay and Sarah T (Take Me Or Leave Me), Lady Chann on I’m Done, and more recently, US-based Producer Tracker John MD on Right Right. Whilst ABSORB emerges himself in guest blog posts, he was joined earlier this year by DJ Hadoshrooms on BBC Newcastle’s BBC Introducing in the North East. ABSORB performed three tracks, two of which are featured on this new EP. ABSORB has also been supported by BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra, SBTV, Kiss FM, BBC 6 Music, Capital Xtra, Rinse FM, BBC Newcastle and more.
Smack is the first track on the EP, with ABSORB fading in the anthemic chant of #PTFAD, before storming in to an electronic, bass-heavy grime production by Deeco, which can only be described as mayhem. The bars are catchy and the flow and delivery are energetic, and a great way to kick start the EP.
The pace slows down, ever so slightly, with the Maniac-produced I Come With It, that starts off with wavering strings before a gritty bassline takes over, and ABSORB delivers compelling lyrics that describe the state of mind he is in when he’s in his zone. The lyrics and means of delivery from ABSORB make it seem as if he is a ticking time bomb, ready to explode on to the scene.
Triple X Hell is a dark and moody affair, produced by S-X, from ABSORB who spits punishing bars on the thudding, eerie synth-laden, trap-influenced grime production. The flows are just breath-taking. The punsishing production on She Could Be The One encapsulates the gruelling task of figuring out if that girl is the one for you. Produced by Dixon Beats, it is a lashing electronic dubstep-influenced bass production with dream-like classical strings and piano keys on the chorus, where ABSORB ponders if she is the one.
Power is quite literally a powerful, smashing grime banger from ABSORB, produced by Terror Danjah. The hook is anthemic and the vocals are catchy, and the lyrics embody the fight for power, the competitiveness that exists between ABSORB and other MC’s. As ABSORB, declares, “keep your eyes on the prize and stay focused”, an ethos that is reflected in ABSORB’s career thus far. What’s That? is the final track on the EP, and is a grime banger produced by Swifta Beater. Sampling Brick Top from Snatch, ABSORB sprays ruthless bars, taking war to rival MC’s. A melodic chorus, a tongue-in-cheek rendition of ”what’s that coming over the hill” closes out the song.
From track to track, Coping Mechanisms, Missions, and Bad Decisions will amaze you with it’s pure energy, smash-and-grab basslines, the chaotic percussion, and ABSORB’s undeniably compelling energetic flows, and lyricism that are either catching or innovative and intriguing. No matter what, ABSORB’s music are a definite crowd mover, a crowd pleaser!
