Airklipz – The L.I.F.E. Mixtape

London Hip Hop Lyricist Airklipz has just recently dropped his brand new project, The L.I.F.E. Mixtape. Living In Fear Everyday is the title of the last mixtape that Airklipz will be releasing before the album ”Black Jesus”. Featuring production from Session 600, Jammy Git, Illternal Beats, Jimmy Screech, Sleepy Time Ghost and Coldblooded Beats, this is a more conscious, topic based release from the rapper.

The mixtape opens with the soulful, boom bap banger ‘Jesus Said’ produced by Session 600, and features thought-provocative lyricism from Airklipz who leaves you with more questions about our existence and religion, but more an insight in to the mind of Airklipz, who displays his philosophical rhyming style, and his ethos in life. Perhaps a stand out bar on the mixtape, Airklipz states, ”I don’t know what Mohammad said, cos Mohammad’s dead, and so is Jesus, I listen to B.I.G instead”. The thought of not following anyone leads in to the Jammy Git-produced track ‘Don’t Expect Anything’, as Airklipz displays smooth-flowing lyricism on a meandering, melodious beat, teaching us to enjoy every experience, without expecting anything or following anyone.

Session 600 delivers many more spaced-out-and-lounging Hip Hop vibes, ‘Rhymebook Medley’, on which Airklipz goes on a tangent, spitting a mixture of bars about differing and random rhymes and subjects from his lyric book, touching upon society, poverty, existence and spirituality, seemingly blessed at his health and wealth he does have. Produced by Session 600 again, ‘What Your Life Like’ is a lyrically ponderous song about life.

The tougher songs on the mixtape come in the form of ‘Beef’, a bass-thundering trap-influenced track, produced by Illternal Beats, and with haunting, hypnotizing chimes too, Airklipz delivers fast-paced darker, hard-edged rhymes, more in touch with the street life, described a most blunt, harsh way. Produced by Illternal Beats yet again, ‘Survival’, featuring scratches from DJ TMB, brings a whole other, more rhythmic, old school Hip Hop vibe. ‘The Only One’ produced by Jimmy Screech goes back to the soulful Hip Hop sounds that Airklipz kicked off the mixtape with, The song features lyrics from the rapper as he shows a caring, selfless attitude by listing some of his own trials and tribulations, revealing that he is not the only one in his situation.

Illternal Beats produces the love-inspired ‘I Think I Love Her’, whilst Jammy Git produces ‘Ribena Kisses’. Open to interpretation, ‘I Think I Love Her’ may seem like a love song, yet is one of those ones that could even have several meanings or interpretations. ‘Ribena Kisses’ features lyrics from Airklipz over a Latin-influenced Hip Hop beat, referring to the senses in describing the way ove feels, looks, smells and tastes. A double-meaning, as Airklipz is also talking about sharing a Ribena straw with a female.

‘The Ghetto Heaven Theory’, featuring lyrics from Nas’s verse on Robin Thicke’s Deep, produced by Jammy Git, is a song about fantasizing about the ideology of a ghetto heaven, introduced by the likes of 2Pac, Coolio, Common and Nas. ‘Greed; is another thunderous, trap-influenced banger on the mixtape, produced by Coldblooded Beats. Airklipz’ flows are breath-taking on the relentless bass, rhyming about the greed that exists in society, where everybody wants money or fame. ‘Fugazi’ features Lace and Wiser Don, and is a fusion of smooth R&B vibes on the chorus, transitioning in to a dark Hip Hop beat, with menacing a reverberating bassline and pounding drums. Airklipz closes the mixtape with second-to-last track ‘Cuzzins’ featuring Cuzin Nate, recorded in Boston, over the famous Milkbone instrumental. The only non-original beat on the mixtape, Airklipz serves the song justice, as does Cuzin Nate.

Airklipz seems to be the all-rounded Hip Hop artist, influenced by a range of artists from 2Pac and Biggie to Nas and Wu-Tang Clan, the golden era of Hip Hop to the soulful sounds of the Detroit-based Motown. In not just the production, but from the conscious, personal and honest lyricism.
