Felix De Luca – FELIX DE LUCA
Copenhagen’s Felix De Luca, described as one of Europe’s most exciting upcoming rappers, returns with his new eponymous EP “Felix De Luca” which is produced in whole by fellow Dane Dontaxaboutit. Felix De Luca’s musical influences on this EP are deeply rooted in old school 90s Hip Hop, with ‘Prelude’ acting as Felix’s warm up on the track, or “the calm before the storm”. Felix spits braggadocio lyrics and brimming with Hip Hop bravado. Felix drops many references to Hip Hop acts/groups on the EP, with him paying homage to A Tribe Called Quest on “No. 1”, with the lyric ‘I’m midnight mauradin’ on my tribe shit’. Felix De Luca continues to take it way back to the 90s with ‘Smoke Breaks’ which features samples used by the likes of Nas, and features singer Temu who adds an R&B chorus. One of a few tracks on which Felix De Luca opens up honestly about his life, he rhymes about financial struggles and heartbreak. ‘First Of The Month’ contains references to Mobb Deep, and is the second track off the EP to have a music video, which was filmed in Brixton, mirroring the raw authenticity of the 90’s New York skate aesthetic of Larry Clark’s film ‘Kids’. This particular track fuses influences of 90s Hip Hop with Grime, owing to the choppy, grimy production and trapesque vibe, and Felix possesses South London’s Jamaican patois-infused slang. ‘Buzzin’ is perhaps the only track apart from the latter to appeal to the more contemporary Hip Hop fans, as Felix delivers slow, slurred lyrics that suggest he is buzzin’ from a Hip Hop favourite, Xanax or Codeine. ‘Find Myself’ features Danish vocalist Louis Rustum, and dealing with De Luca’s experiences of infidelity, is the other track to be open and sincere from Felix.
Felix De Luca’s influences on this EP range from A Tribe Called Quest to Mobb Deep and Nas, as well as some of today’s rap stars being of influence somehow. As mentioned in previous blogs, Felix De Luca has a similar sound to that of Top Dawg Ent’s Kendrick Lamar, purely for his unorthodox sound and voice and flows, but his contemporary European inspirations bring out the grimy side of his arsenal.
