Kid Bookie X Christie ‘You’ll Rate Me When I’m Dead (Y.R.M.W.I.D)
South Londoner Kid Bookie returns with his much anticipated project “You’ll Rate Me When I’m Dead” or simply Y.R.M.W.I.D, which was premiered via MTV The Wrap Up. Boasting features and production from Dot Rotten aka Zeph Ellis, US Rapper Nasaan and Lewis Cullen, this EP showcases the many talents that Kid Bookie possesses in terms of musical ability. This is much more than Grime, much more than Rap.
Kicking off with ‘Premonition’ featuring Nasaan and Dot Rotten, and produced by Dot under the alias of Zeph Ellis, this trap banger samples Dr Dre’s “What’s The Difference”, and with quick-fire flows from the trio, they send lyrical shots at rival rappers, and with wordplay that is off the hook, they pose threat to inferior lyricists with their premonitions. Christie, who worked closely with Kid Bookie on the EP provides the hook, singing fantastically. Zeph Ellis goes on to produce ‘Ain’t Got Time’ which is a skippy riddim of more Grime nature, but possessing an R&B vibe, especially on the chorus segment. Kid Bookie’s no-holds-barred rhymes are blunt as he conveys that he has a lack of time for anyone playing games. Lewis Cullen continues the R&B sound with ‘Won’t Do’ which also yet again features Christie who provides his soulful voice. A sauntering track, this one is about not making mistakes no more and the determination to win against all odds.
‘Whats The Game Without Books’, which was the first release from this project to get a video, is produced by Lewis Cullen again. Questioning what the game would be like without someone like him, speaking his mind no doubt, Books rhymes about opinions and controversy, and states that he isn’t in the game to be liked. Kid Bookie provides his own sung chorus on this plodding, ambient beat.
Having talked to Sian Anderson (BBC 1Xtra) about his sound, Books said “Before anything, I grew up on Rock music. I grew up on Slipknot so when all the kids were doing other things they used to tell me “you listen to Slipknot – you’re different” and I like that so those are the kinds of things I wanted to put in and I wanted it to translate into my sound. If I can let that resonate with the people and they can understand what I make and what I do then that’s what my sound is.”
Not only is this evident in some of the production, specifically ‘Hey’, which features heavy-pounding drums, growling bassline and creeping strings, but his lyrics and delivery are manic and aggressive like Slipknot, bordering on dark themes but express his anger nonetheless. His flows can be sporadic and energetic too.
