Mayday – Enigmatic Zodiac EP
Mayday is the name of a rising, up and coming Grime talent hailing from Birmingham, UK. Having released his debut “Enigmatic Zodiac” EP back in November 2016, he has gained 13.3K plays on Spotify alone.
This EP features 4 tracks, produced by Mistakay, PKBrako (Brak0161), Maribor and Furbzee, which explore Mayday’s personal experiences which may often be relatable to the listener. ‘Dun Changed’, produced by Mistakay, eases you in to this Grime EP, and features reflective lyrics from Mayday on a melodic, melancholy and mellow trap influenced beat, where he rhymes about the changes he has undertook in his life to become a better person. Mayday’s flow on this one is unorthodox for the type of production, fast flowing and brimming with lyrical substance.
Mayday ups the tempo on the PKBrako produced ‘Disrespectful’ wowing with the fast flows that match the rhythm and energy of the beat. Mayday’s bars are witty and humorous, as he spits about the lack of respect he feels he gets from those that ignore him or his undeniable skills.
Maribor produces ‘Girls’ which has an old school grime flava as well as vocal samples injecting an R&B vibe. Mayday puts his story telling skills to the test as he rhymes about his experiences with girls, detailing the ups and downs, the happy times and the sad times, the good and the bad, of falling in and out love with girls. An interesting concept well executed by Mayday on this track, and he keeps up the energetic flows through out.
‘Demons’ closes out the EP and is a dark and gritty grime riddim produced by Furbzee, and with a music video coming for this one in the future, it’s no surprise. Mayday ravages the beat with wicked flows and bars, going in devilish with a lyrical slaughter, taking the war to his rivals. Mayday is bound to get much darker with the visuals to this one!
Mayday is a different breed of emcee in the Grime scene, one that is much more lyrically astute, definitely in that he puts a lot in to his rhymes, something that even many current rappers hardly achieve. He has the energy for Grime, and the beat selection on this EP complements his style and the lyrical content. We look forward to hearing new music from Mayday in the first few months of the year and beyond, and will definitely be on the look out for the video for Demons coming soon.
