One Take Freestyle – The Remixes

When Rude Kid remixed Wiley’s classic ‘Wot Do U Call It?’ for his collaborative EP #SixFiveThree with Ghetts, I wonder if they had any idea how much it would blow up. Taking the Wiley beat, Rude transformed it and rejuvenated in to an up-to-date Grime banger with a Trap twist, more bass and energetic claps and snares. Here is a run down of my favourite and the best One Take Freestyles/Remixes to come out this month, setting the levels higher once again for the Grime Scene.

Before the One Take Freestyle even became a thing, Midlands collective Setting Pace dropped a cypher over the beat around Christmas. Rame, Scheme, Adeeks, Bdizzle and the rest of them shut it down as they shelled the Wiley refix with ferocious headtopping bars.

Possibly one of the best One Take Freestyle;s and one that perhaps set of the latest Remix trend was Stormzy’s version, which had him send for the likes of Cadell, Dappy, J Spades, and of course boxer Dillian Whyte. There have been a few one man show’s as the mc’s from Nick Brewer to Tana to SeeJay 100 dropped a remix for the One Take Freestyle. Nick Brewer comes with the skippy and rapid flows, not necessarily one a sending hype, displaying his wordsmithery with terrific wordplay and extensive lyrical content, speaking on his tussle with conforming to expectations. SeeJay100 spits about his motivation having grown up with MOBO winners. Seejay throws punches and quite literally in the video, which also has a cameo from Cadet. Other notable remixes are Guvna B, Tana from Birmingham, Koder, Yungen, and North London’s Rage.

GRM Daily had the lowdown on the recent Twitter interactions between East London duo and Big Tobz and Blittz Gullyish vs Bonkaz, which of course resulted in the three sending via a One Take Freestyle. In short, Big Tobz named his top five mc’s that would spin him in rap, with Bonkaz replying after feeling overlooked, challenging Tobz and Blittz to a friendly battle. With all three bringing the friendly fire, Big Tobz especially going in with rapid fire and Blittz taking digs at Bonkaz, you can hear the cheekiness and delivery in their delivery. Bonkaz came back to deliver a double slam on the pair, taking swipes of his own at the pair that are witty too. Check them both out and decide the victor for yourself.

Then you have the B2B One Take Freestyles! As well as Big Tobz and Blittz Gullyish taking swings at Bonkaz, you have Cadet and Youngs Teflon going back to back. Youngs Teflon goes in on certain man that ain’t on nothing, referencing the Kanye and Wiz Khalifa beef on Twitter. Cadet is ferocious with bullish delivery firmly and boldly stating that nobody is better than him. Cadet is especially gritty and grimy on this one. Check out the double time flows from Cadet and the link between the two competitive mc’s. It’s too much! Who can go back to back better than Marvell Crew? Do you remember that legendary 3-way on Westwood? Well then, a 2-way is nothing to Double S and Shocka. The Flow Farda goes ham with skippy flows as does Shocka, both spinning man with a slew of pars, Double S mentioning wheel ups and Shocka emphasizing that be it R&B, Hip Hop or EDM, or even 140pbm, nevertheless, they run the track and make it look effortless.

Who do you think had the best One Take Freestyle? Either way, each and every artist brought something different to the table. Varied styles, ranging flows, lyrical content and differing purposes, whether it was taking on other mc’s or showcasing your talents. From freestyles to music videos to cyphers, these are too much for the Grime Scene, and it’s good to see some healthy competition that pushes each artist to up the levels. I think Ghetts and Rude Kid deserve recognition, even a MOBO for their latest banger #OneTake.
