Essex’s very own Scumbag Medz (Bun Xtra), or simply Medz, makes his overdue return following a hiatus. Medz gives us a new project in the form of five-track EP ‘Freestyle Frenzy Pt. 1’, which kicks off with Medz warming up on a fun refix of MJ’s Billie Jean, produced by ShyGuy and YeahItIs. Medz quiets up all those acting and talking fakeness. Medz then jumps on a rhythmic, heavy-hitting drill-influenced beat by HeatMaky, called ‘Matador Freestyle’. He showcases some terrific flows, and with charisma and confidence, Medz peppers the track with some humorous swipes at his competitors in the music scene. ‘No Love Freestyle’ produced by Zel is another Drill production with more personal lyrics from Medz, as he ponders on the hard times when many didn’t show no love, giving dues to those who were with him, expressing dislike for those that come around when it benefits them. ‘Real Freestyle’ produced by LB follows in the same vein, but a melodious Trap/Hip-Hop beat features Medz conveying his hunger and determination for success, having started at the bottom, with a strong desire to provide for his family. Work-focused and passionate enough to chase his dreams, Medz is clearly cut from a different cloth to the rest. Medz closes out the EP with ‘What’s Poppin Freestyle’, a Grime track produced by Puda. Medz showcases clever wordplay and breath-taking flows, repping his roots in the Grime scene heavily whilst lyrically spinning those that dare step to him.

Scumbag Medz is back, hopefully for the long haul. Medz’ charisma, cheekiness and confidence is evident across all tracks, as well as his penchant for lyricism, on Hip-Hop/Rap, Trap, Drill and Grime. Whether he is sending humorous digs at anyone that it may concern, or delving into his life experiences on a deep one, Medz remains that cheeky chap from Essex, taking you on more twists and turns with his flows than the rides at Southend-On-Sea have to offer.
