Scumfam – Scumfam.co.uk (The Mixtape)
Sheffield collective Scumfam are out in full force, Tez Kidd, Kdot, Ak, Tempo, Kannan, Milks, Kuta and more, for the release of their new mixtape Scumfam.co.uk, as a whole collective. The mixtape sees many combinations of collaborations between the MC’s, most of the production strictly 140bpm, pure grime and trap. ‘B Boy’ is a favourite, a bass-trembling, boom bap style tune with a Reggae/Dancehall-influenced chorus from Tempooo, both Tez Kidd and Kdot going in with clever wordplay, sending rival MC’s to the grave with sharp lyricism and precise flows and delivery. AK, Kdot and Kannan roll the back the years with remix of Roll Deep’s classic Celebrate, the lyrics depicting their unorthodox method to getting with a girl, under the influence of alcohol and drugs. There is a remix of the Lolingo-produced Elf Kid track ‘Golden Boy’, a rhythmic Grime beat that samples Amerie’s 1 Thing. Kdot runs the track with energetic flows, just straight barring. It’s a shutdown on ‘It’s Not A Problem’ which features Ak, Kdot, Milks and Nerva, all four effortlessly shelling a heavyweight Grime-come-Trap beat. Saint delivers some pain and realness on ‘Last Hope’, made famous by Drake and then DMX. Saint emphasizes that hard work pays off, having to provide for his family and to graft for his dreams.
If you remember Tez Kidd’s ‘Combo to the Safe’, then ‘Lied To Me’ follows in the same footsteps in being a smooth R&B number, with Tez Kidd taking inspiration from and sampling Mark Morrison’s Return of the Mack, the lyrics depicting and expressing Tez’ feelings towards a woman who lied to him event hough he laid everything out for her. ‘Line Dem Up’ features Tempo and Kuta going in over DJ Scholar’s Hear Dis, vocalled by Chip and Stormzy. The two MC’s spray lyrics at a line up of MC’s in their sights, injecting much energy and excellent delivery from Tempo who provides Jamaican Patois. Saint and Kdot link up on ‘Make A Change’, dropping rhymes over a wonderfully produced, soulful, Jazz-influenced Hip Hop beat, both expressing their stress at a lack of change, willing themselves to improve the situation. Another nod to old skool Grime is Kannan’s remix of President T’s Zeph Ellis-produced Best In Britain, sampling Rebound X’s Rhythm N Gash, renamed Rhythm N Grime.
There a couple of tracks featuring the whole line up, ‘My Boys’ and ‘Let Them Know’, combining all of the talents of Scumfam, but with each and every track, each MC brings something different, and with a mix up in genres from Grime, Trap, Hip Hop or even R&B or Bassline Grime, there is a tune to be enjoyed by everyone. An eclectic offering from the collective! The lyrical content is varied from the crew, sometimes music-related, sometimes from a road perspective, or otherwise, but still the wordplay and punchlines are in abundance.
