KIPGANG member and UK Rapper Society releases his debut mixtape “Obsessive Lyric Disorder”, nineteen tracks deep. A mixed collection of Hip Hop and Trap/Electronic and Grime production, Society delivers rhymes that tackle the everyday surroundings of the society he lives in, from his addiction to weed smoking on ‘Addiction’ to quoting Biggie’s classic Warning song on the Trap influenced ‘BIG Said’, Society also drops lyrics about his dark past and his current situation, taking the listener on a journey of his mind and thoughts. ‘Past Life’ is exemplary of Society’s lyrics depicting his life thus far and the dark world we live in, let alone just your city. As he states on ‘Soul Snatcher’, Society acts as the man and the voice of the people, and ‘World of Pain’ is a track that emphasizes that pain is global. Tracks like ‘Hip Hop’ or ‘Let Go’ clarify that Society uses music as an anti-depressant, a safe haven from the world and a means to express himself. You then have ‘Hunger Pains’ featuring Searcher, a track that illustrates Society’s hunger and determination to be a success and prove himself on the bigger platforms. As well as having an incredible lyrical ability, Society is also metaphorical in his bars, but tracks like ‘Unstoppable’, which features Flo Kirton, Rhymeskeemz and ET Anomaly, and ‘Attacking Forward Freestyle’ showcase straight cut fast-flowing lyricism and metaphors, clever punchlines from Society in particular.
A mix of production on this debut mixtape from Society, it shows his versatility. With mostly Hip Hop, you have tracks like ‘Unstoppable’, ‘BIG Said’ or ‘Lyrically Ready’ which are either more Trap or Grime orientated, ‘Addiction’ which is influenced by a bit of soul, or ‘Just The Way I Feel’ which introduces a kind of acoustic sound with guitar strings making up part of the melody. Overall, this is a brilliant debut project and a a great introduction to Society, whose lyricism is always real, believable and relatable.
