State Of Play is new and exciting band from London, that brings a refreshing, new and unique sound, blending the genres of Rock, Soul and Hip. The band consists of Anthony ‘A-Mens’ Mensah, Rapper, Ahmar ‘S.V’ Ferguson and Missy McAnulty with a wide range of vocal talents, and Alex ‘Fando’ Fernandes, Will Kerr, and Ben Spooner, on Lead Guitar, Bass and Percussion respectively. Their new single, taken from forthcoming EP, is called ‘What It Is To Be’, a mix of Rock and Hip Hop, with A-Mens lyrically exploring the theme of human kind, the creation and the evolution of the our ancestors, chronicling from hunters to present times where we are technologically advanced, and dominant, yet the track denotes also our flaws as a human race. The single’s production takes you on a rollercoaster, starting out with more mellow guitar riffs and light crisp percussion. Finally, reaching a climax of thrashing drums and bass, with distorted guitar strings, and Missy McAnulty is flawless with perfect singing vocals which are underlying the vocals of A-Mens. The subject theme of this track is marvellous with conscious lyricism, and the balance of live instrumentation and mix of soulful singing, Rap and Rock reminds of the likes of Strange Music’s ¡Mayday!.
