STILL SHADEY – ‘HOW TO KILL A CATERPILLAR’

Multi-faceted UK Rapper and Song-writer Still Shadey takes the listeners on a journey of healing, self-discovery and purpose on his latest project, ‘How To Kill a Caterpillar’. Serving as his 6th studio project, Shadey updates us all on his personal growth, re-exploring past traumas, and providing greater context on the musician’s life and art. Via children’s story-book-style narration, the album explores the contrast between Shadey’s Christian upbringing and violence he witnessed growing up in Croydon. ‘Caterpillar Intro’ opens up the project, and sets the tone for the LP, as Shadey touches on counseling and overcoming failure, delving in to his relationships with family and friends. Mellow, sombre tracks such as the Gnarls Barkley-sampled ‘I Remember’ and ‘Last Breath’ go deep with poignant lyrics, speaking on his dreams and ambitions, wanting to make loved ones proud before he departs. ‘Heaven’ and ‘Blessings’, an infectious Dancehall track with fantastic vocals and a catchy hook from Shadey, are uplifting tracks, counting his blessings and being thankful to the most high. ‘Diamonds’ features Jo Joey and Melvillous on a Drill/Dancehall influenced production, and promotes the importance of self-worth, with the artists comparing themselves to diamonds, created under pressure, coming from nothing to something. ‘Undone Ties’ has double meaning, as Shadey rhymes about his ties to the Lord, as well as taking the chance to boast about his smart dress sense. The album closes with ‘Love Like Yours’, a piano-led melody with Gospel-like, soulful background vocals, with Shadey pondering on the love and beauty in life, thanking above for how far he has come and the success he has had so far, feeling love and gratitude.

Still Shadey might be killing off a caterpillar, but he transforms in to a butterfly, ready to soar higher, and with charismatic delivery that comes across in his singing voice, deep, thought-provoking lyrics that are poignant, and the sound and production is unique. As Shadey explains, “Every season has a caterpillar and a butterfly”. He continues, “Change is painful. But nothing is more painful than being stuck somewhere you don’t belong.”

Still Shadey has a track record for music nominations, sold-out shows, and national radio recognition across BBC, Kiss FM and Captial Xtra. Shadey is proving that he is a force to be reckoned with. His single ‘Heaven’ (Drill Remix) reached number 7 in the Hip Hop charts, whilst Afrobeat track ‘Blessings’ took the number 2 spot in the iTunes ‘World’ charts.

Still Shadey is a breath of fresh air for sure, some positive, happy vibes in trying times, and he comes across as passionate about music, with a desire to win. With undeniable talent, and accolades to boast of, we looking forward to hearing and seeing where Still Shadey kicks on to after the release of ‘How To Kill a Caterpillar’.
