The Bar Staff – The Prohibition
Portsmouth Hip Hop collective The Bar Staff present to you a collection of bootlegs and exclusives in their latest release as group, called ‘The Prohibition’. Featuring tracks from ASBO, Parv, Jamian Who (formerly Jai BlaZe), M.O.N.G.R.E.L and Mollie Scott, and a guest appearance from Phitz, and production from Parv and The Arca Tec, the mixtape stays with the prohibition bootleg theme with such remixes as the ‘Stay Schemin” remix, depicting the stark and gritty reality of grinding on the music wave and trying tom put your city on the map. Other remixes include The Bar Staff’s remix of La Roux’ ‘In For The Kill’, an up-tempo Trap style production with rapid flows, featuring a lyrical onslaught, as they have a deadly eye for their enemies and rivals in the rap scene, and also Parv’s own remix of Drake’s ‘Pound Cake’, where he drops deep lyrics, in which he deals with everyday pressures and the constant reminder of having to make a success of his endeavours, and and delivers a few choice words for those concerned. The Bar Staff concoct some introspective tracks such as ‘Battles Within’, featuring the whole line up of TBS, including Mollie Scott whom lends her amazing singing vocals the the hook, in which each lyricist delves in to his own trials and tribulations in life, working hard and pushing towards a better life. ‘Reality Sinks In’ is another track that deals with the pain and strife of everyday life which threatens to halt progression and achievement of goals. Moving away from the depressing reality, the crew joins up with Phitz on ‘Hammerdance’, a lashing, thumping Hip Hop beat, as the punchlines come in droves, as they all juggle the flows, with the likes of M.O.N.G.R.E.L possessing a swinging flow yet hard hitting delivery, as they deliver lethal bars to showcase their wordplay skills, and zone in on inferior competition, depicting themselves as formidable forces with lyrical prowess. Jamian Who, formerly Jai BlaZe goes solo on ‘Tramps ‘R’ Lean’, Tinie Tempah’s ‘Trampoline’, delivering a well written, infectious hook, decimating the beat with bars in which he rhymes about girls and weed amongst other things, shedding light on how he gets down when he is stoned, and Jamian possesses crazy flows and unique delivery on this track. Another track which is one of my favourites is M.O.N.G.R.E.L’s lyrical murderation on the classic Beatnuts’ ‘Off The Books’, renamed ‘Off The Jooks’, as he comes out swinging with heavyweight lyrics, killing it with fast-paced flows which he juggles masterfully, spitting ferociously as he drills complex rhymes in to your head, labeling himself as a crook in the final hook that is out to take the rap money. Other tracks include Asbo’s remix of 50 Cent’s ‘Window Shopper’, as he funnily refixes the original hook, calling the haters dinlo’s, as he rhymes about his everyday grind and hustle, grafting in music to make a better life for his child, and really letting the haters push him to go harder. The final track is ‘Nightmares’, featuring Mollie Scott on the hook once again, on an eerie, creepy Hip Hop instrumental, with the likes of Jamian putting down creeping flows, as the hook sums up the fact that this collective artists will get in your head, even your nightmares, with M.O.N.G.R.E.L rhyming about Norman Bates, the American Psycho likening himself to a pack of wolves hunting, and Asbo rhyming about the likes of Chucky and Freddy from Nightmare on Elm Street. Mollie Scott produces a haunting, yet enchanting and mesmerisingly sung chorus. The Bar Staff deal with the real life situations as well as showcasing their lyrical prowess on this mixtape, their lyrical substance having no boundaries it seems, and their flows and deliveries are in no doubt astounding.
