This last December, UK Hip Hop artist MC Midas released a brand new mix entitled “The ‘Can You Rap?’ Show”, in which it consists of new Hip Hop and RnB tracks which showcase another side of the artist who likes to tackle all genres. On this particular mixtape, MC Midas releases 22 banging tracks with many features, and featuring production from some original producers, plus some recognisable remixes. MC Midas’ lyrical style is cheeky, fun and entertaining, his flow is superb too. “Blaze It, Pass It” is a remix of 2Pac’s “All Eyez On Me”, refixed by a2dj for Midas to spit comedic verses, wordplay is humorous, and I love how he took a cold, gangsta-type beat and flipped it on it’s head, almost unrecognisable. Also featuring Conman aka Roulette who drops sick bars. The hook is banging too! Midas flows over hard-hitting Hip Hop beats like Ludacris’ “Obama Is Here”, also with crazy punchlines and precision flow.

“Breakin The Chains” is a slow-progressing, but hard-hitting Dubstep/Hip Hop beat, with an epic hook, rhyming about his pain, in general spitting about having gone through hard times, but yet he is gonna break free and make it in music. There are many more tracks that MC Midas spits about making positives out of negatives and getting somewhere. “Can’t Believe It” sees Midas spit rapid bars, as does the featured artist B-kind, both amazed at having made it.

“Don’t Know Why” featuring king l and snoopa is a more serious tune, with all three artists addressing the haters on a remix of Obie Trice and Nate Dogg’s “The Set Up”. They spit sick bars, flowing effortlessly over the Hip Hop beat, lyrically deading the situation.

Another intriguing remix from Midas is a remix of Spandau Ballet’s “True” in which he rhymes about true mates, reflecting on old times, hanging around with mates, having laughs and going out drinking and having harmless fun, letting off fireworks. Through all of the changes, in the chorus he states that he will always have his mates back’s. The is a fabulous song which sees MC Midas sharing his fondest childhood memories over an RnB track, and is definitely something different.

Some of the original production on this mixtape, especially from the likes of Chris Wheeler (Brit Hop), Metronom (Over The Moon) and Lone Drum (Tru North) are quite soulful Hip Hop instrumentals, and somewhat reminiscent of production from Wu Tang-style beats, with an raw, old school, shaolin vibe to them. Midas also has some amazing features on the mixtape from So Solid’s Face to some lesser known names like Conman, B-Kind, King L and Snoopa. All of these artists and more bring a different quality to the their features track and compliment MC Midas.

• SHOWING POTENTIAL – MC Midas is already a accomplished lyricist, if not before then “The ‘Can You Rap?’ Show” certainly proves that Midas has an abundance of lyrics, punchlines and his wordplay and wordsmithery is superb. His style varies, he sounds like the likes of Eminem when he is dropping crazy bars, having fun with his creativeness, but also has those songs which motivate and inspire, and Midas is also brilliant at drawing from experiences in life and basing a track around a certain story or idea. The way that MC Midas also tackles many different types of Hip Hop, not to mention RnB and much more, he is diverse enough as an artist o catch the eye of some major A&R with his talent and originality.
