Curtis “Beats” King – Interview
Introduce yourself. Who are you and describe your sound in three words?
Well the names Curtis ‘Beats’ King and im a 28 yr old lyricist from Rochdale, Manchester and If I was to describe my sound in three words id say… Hard, Lyrical & Funny
Describe your style, and how are you unique to other artists?
Id say my style is diversified really I try to blend my lyrics to the beat I am working on at the time, I like to go hard and be witty with metaphors and punchlines while dropping double rhymes but I also like trying to get a message or a point across while blending in my sense of humour to make the listener smile or laugh I feel to have just one style is to be stuck in one gear on one level and to reach a higher level your style has to progress
When did music become a part of your life?
Music has been a part of my life since birth really I come from a musical family so from a young age music has been running through my veins ever since I was 2-3 yrs old playing on the old council estate drum kit (pots & pans) it was evident music would play the biggest part in my life and when I heard my first hip hop tune which was ‘Regulate’ I knew hip hop was the music for me
How long have you been making music, and did you have any encouragement?
Ive been making music now for about 12 years but for many years I never really knew whether I wanted to rap or be a producer so I would toy with both areas learning how to better myself in both areas trying to find if I was suited to one area more than the other eventually I found as much as I love producing I loved writing and rapping that bit more so I started to focus my energy into becoming an artist
Who are your main influences?
Im influenced by so many artists from so many different genres of music its very hard to pick jus one but if I was to pick within hip hop id say the likes of tupac, biggie, snoop, warren g, nate dogg, dr dre, method man, redman, big pun, kurupt in no particular order
Away from music, who are you as a person, and what are your interests/hobbies?
Id say im a chilled kinda guy with a good sense of humour but I don’t suffer fools either
Does this reflect on the music that you produce/play, or do you use music as an escape from real life?
Yeah id say my music does portray the kinda guy I am but at the same time its an escape because u can forget your problems etc when your in that zone musically everything else ceases to exsist
Have you performed in front of a crowd yet, if so how big a crowd?
Ive performed infront of small crowds at gatherings but im looking to expand that to a bigger stage as I try to take my carrer to the next level
What are your plans for the near future in terms of new music, collaborations and tours/events?
My plans for the future are to keep flooding ya ears with as much music as I can currently I am dropping a new tune every week and at the time of this interview im currently in week 9, collaboration wise im currently working on a couple of projects with a couple up and coming artists from my area with the hope to have something for release in the near future
Where do you see yourself in 5/10 years?
Considering how the music industry can be to a artist in 5/10 years time if im able to make enough to live from my music id be happy anything more would be a blessing
