Wrekonize – Sunny Winter
Strange Music artist, and ¡Mayday! band frontman, Wrekonize recently collaborated with producer Hippie Sabotage for a brand new EP to kick of 2015, called ‘Sunny Winter’, with all production taken from the producer’s release ‘Sunny’. The EP opens with ‘Shadows In The Dark (Picture This)’, in which the lyricism depicts Wrekonize’s search for happiness and peace, whilst the chorus conveys his emotion, his down-trodden, but yet fighting spirit, fighting ‘the shady regime’, the shadows in the dark, and also revealing his desire to make music for the fans, and avoid monotonous work such as 9 to 5’s.
Wrekonize proceeds to the next track called ‘Push Gets To Shovin’, a deep bass orientated Trap beat, decimating the beat with rapid flow, rhyming about a non-stop party life, raining down metaphors on your ears. Wrek fits his bars so cleverly around the production, which features cuts and stops, as he moulds his flow and deliverance around it. We go on to ‘Talking Walls’, a metaphorical meaning in my opinion, for those who are always talking and running their mouths with fake talk, in which Wrekonize treats them like ‘talking walls’. ‘Ridin’ Solo’ depicts a manic lifestyle for Wrek when he is out on the road, bringing stress as he lives for everybody, and Wrekonize emphasizes strong family values, and also rhyming about fake friends and loss of love through pain. The last track, ‘Your Soul’, is another that conveys the hectic life of fame, which Wrekonize puts on a smile, yet grafting to make and put out music, losing friends and family along the way, yet he celebrates and toasts to the ups and downs.
The production by Hippie Sabotage is sometimes heavily bass orientated, where as all beats on the EP are Trap influenced, with most being ambient, spacey, electronic music, with the likes of Shadows In The Dark and Your Soul featuring guitar riffs, and both as well as Ridin’ Solo being more calm, rather than energetic to the rest of the production, which complements Wrekonize’s often rapid flow and delivery, as he superbly and effortlessly switches between speeds. As for the song writing and structure, Wrek without a doubt displays masterful lyricism and song craft, particularly on ‘Talking Walls’ and ‘Your Soul’, in which Wrek includes bridges/breaks, as well as starting each verse with a refrain, leading in to the verse, and also uses alliteration of some form in those two tracks mentioned.
