30 Year Old East London Rapper Marvelous Southstar is independently pushing his music within London, and is set to succeed this year. His last release, ‘Trap City’ EP was released mid-2015, on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. The title of the release may suggest subject matters to be hard-edged, road lyrical content, but from the off, ‘Trapped’ sets out Marvelous Southstar’s intentions to escape the trappings of the city. ‘Singer Kagey Constance joins Marvelous on a banger with an R&B vibe, and which celebrates having a good time. Kagey rejoins him on ‘Old Skool’ as well as ‘Problems’ which both see them take on the roles of lovers in a heartbreaking love situation, questioning their love for each other. Kagey’s singing ability is really impressive on these tracks, and is quite a promising UK Urban artist in the making. ‘Focused’ features Marvelous rhyming on an ambient yet bass-laden Trap instrumental, conveying a focused mind on what ever sets his eyes on. ‘The Wait Is Over’ featuring JoJo F is something a bit different from the rest of the EP, a DnB / UK Dance vibe with the production , and that ends the EP nicely, the lyrics seemingly conveying Marvelous’ feeling that he is finally going to prosper in music. The one track that caught my attention was with Paigey Cakey and called ‘Bad Girl’ though. Maybe the most up-tempo, ultra-trap banger on the EP, the lyrics are about that one woman with a bad attitude, with Paigey going on to express her desire for a bad boy.
This is a solid EP from Marvelous Southstar, and with nothing but positive lyrical content from the rapper, and he provides a few stand out bangers on the project, with excellent features to support him. Marvelous Southstar is a refreshing sound and style, offering us something different to some of the UK Rap out at present, yet with hard-edged, banging Trap beats. Marvelous goes against the grain of what is trending, just being himself and keeping it real in his music.
