Subculture Sage – Gold
Subculture Sage is producer Subculture Sounds and MC Hypeman Sage from North London who since the self-release of their debut single two years ago, have manifested themselves as one of the UK’s most innovative and talked about Hip Hop acts.
The duo have just revealed their video for ‘Gold’ taken from their debut Mixtape ‘Big Smoke Autumn Blues’which will be available as free download from April 18th 2016. The video for ‘Gold’ is shot in Zimbabwe and features gold miners at work set against Subculture Sage’s dark heavy soundtrack and urban social commentary rap.
‘Cinematographer, Ricky Patel made his directorial debut shooting Subculture Sage’s Gold video in Red Church – a small mining town 4 hours outside Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare. After the mines closed, Red Church’s population were left with little options while they waited for the mines to re-open creating many illegal miners as the land was still rich with gold. The concept grew organically during a recent trip to Zimbabwe when a link was made between the inspiring stories of the miners and town folk and this particular song.’
While Sage thematically explores a range of topics around youth, mischief, morality and the self; producer Subculture fuses contemporary urban beats with tropical colour, referencing Jazz, Afrobeat and Indie as closely as their Hip Hop foundation.
The summer of 2014 saw the release of their debut self-titled EP which was described by Noisey as, “stretching the sides of what Hip Hop can be,” and Pigeons & Planes as being, “at the front of the UK’s new wave of experimental Hip Hop…Subculture Sage are genuinely interested in creating something new.” One of the singles on the EP reached number 6 in the UK Spotify Viral Charts and the EP garnered further support from The Line of Best Fit, iD, Wonderland, SBTV, NME, Rob Da Bank (BBC R1), Tom Ravenscroft (BBCR6) and John Kennedy (XFM).
Subculture Sage have shared the stage with the likes of Dead Prez, Pharoah Monch, Jurassic 5, The Pharcyde, Mungos Hifi, Task Force and many more artists as well as hosting regular parties and DJ sets in venues across London.
