Ash Shakur has unexpectedly dropped a music video for ‘Star Crossed Or Not’, one of the tracks taken from his latest EP “Hare Colours”. The young wordsmith Ash delivers laid back vocals on the chugging Hip Hop beat with underlying R&B vibes, the song being about and focusing “modern day relationships and the fact that some could lead to a dead-end or the fear of till death do us part”. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet for the theme of the song and video, Ash Shakur puts his own twist on and flips the narrative on a Shakespeare classic, exploring why our generation sometimes might not feel the need to get married and stay with the same partner for ever. Yet the song is left up to interpretation for the listeners to decide why the couple in the narrative can’t be together, even though they still love each other but there is always something stopping them from doing so. In that respect, the listener is forced to draw from personal experiences to relate to such situations.
‘Star Crossed Or Not’ is a superb take on the Shakespeare classic Romeo and Juliet, and which showcases Ash Shakur’s terrific song writing skills, the song being catchy with the Ash’s hopes of the chorus becoming a classic line, but the lyrics of the song also have a message to provoke thoughts and even conversation on those who listen.
