Rude Grl: Bruce Banner
Following on from the duo’s debut single ‘That’s the Way it is (Survival of the Sickest)’ released earlier this year, Rude Grl have released an immense new single, ‘Bruce Banner’, via Rat Boy’s new label SCUM.
Rude Grl is a collaboration between Jenna Dickens and Ben Langmaid (ex-La Roux). The duo draws influences from early 80s and 90s electro Hip-Hop, and post-punk. The brash, harsh and loudness of Punk and the fun, tongue-in-cheek style of golden-age Hip-Hop of the 80s can be heard on ‘Bruce Banner’, which premiered on Line of Best Fit recently, also accompanied by an equally raucous video. On Bruce Banner, Jenna says: “Bruce Banner is all about letting your inner “YAS” out…and I think the video pretty much sums it all up. It’s a whole load of ratchet behaviour”. The lyricism is harsh but fun, tongue-in-cheek wit from Jenna, and also catchy from the verses to the hook, and is scattered with witty punchlines. The video is wacky and outlandish, compiled of random dance routines that fit with the groove of the song, spliced in with appropriate scenes from different online videos and TV shows.
At the age of 24, Jenna has never stood still in proving her credentials as a singer, songwriter and MC. In her former incarnation of JLD, she collaborated with the likes of Wiley, Bless Beats and Roll Deep. As part of the band ‘The Binary Kids’, she toured with Lady Sovereign supporting N-Dubz and working with Basement Jaxx. She even came close to winning BBC 1Xtra’s ‘Battle of the Nation’ rap battle…at the age of 12!
The result of a turbulent upbringing, Jenna was born and raised in South Wales by a single mother struggling with mental illness. When she was 18 she signed to Mercury Records but was dropped without ever releasing any music. She was snapped up as a model by Elite Models, but around this time she suffered a personal tragedy and began struggling to find her way through the baggage of the past, while her alcoholism raged. She explored her post-punk influences during this time, releasing a few songs and featuring on Sub Focus’ debut album.
In 2015, Jenna met Ben Langmaid, whom she credits with not only helping develop her as an artist, but also help her get clean and sober.
Ben Langmaid said: “Jenna and I clicked immediately, as soon as we met. When it comes to her rhymes and flows, combined with the journey she’s been through, she’s a musical force to be reckoned with. She is the real deal, and a true star, so I was excited to work with her and I’m really proud of the music we’ve created!”
