Review – Chronikal – The Chronik Mixtape
Death Kiss Media Comments:
UK Female emcee Chronikal releases her newest mixtape “The Chronik”, which is a play on her stage name, and might even be seen as homage, her paying dues to Dr Dre’s “The Chronic”. The colour used for the artwork, which features a couple of great promo pics, also plays up the idea of chronic as is green, so the idea and concept for the mixtape is quite plain to see.
From the outset, Chronik is a well-rounded emcee as she showcases and proves on the tape, being and apt enough to take on a wide range of genres from dubstep to grime, electro to house and even hip hop and trap. In my opinion, Chronikal destroys dubstep, she seems most comfortable on that particular genre, so I assume the more gully and dirty the production is, the more she is driven to go in hard with her lyricism. There are a couple of dubstep tracks on the mixtape; “Chronik 1.0” and “Dubstep Freestyle”, both of which seem to be getting positive feedback with the videos that she has released.
Chronikal seems to just stick to the flow of the beat for most of the tape, she seems rigid and doesn’t let loose and control the beat in a commanding way, she doesn’t tend to flow freely without the constraints of the beat pattern that hold her back. As far as the lyricism goes, she kills it with most songs, her lyricism consisting of subjects from partying, getting wasted, her life experiences, and she also comes across as a strong-minded female that doesn’t want to conform to what society expects her to be. She also comes across as rebellious and troublesome in some aspects. Her flow sometimes lets her down on the most part, which is a shame as her lyricism holds so much weight and she could compete with any top emcee, male or female.
Chronik’s beat selection is good, not great but at least it shows that she knows her own style and is obviously influenced by a wide range of musical genres. There are the two dubstep tracks, and there is some electro, with “Make Me Wanna Dance”, an electric production, a rave-perfect track designed with the purpose to literally make you wanna dance. There is also your hip hop and trap with “Feelin So Good” featuring Jay Murda on the hook, a feel-good hip hop track, “He Say She Say” with Motzzi, a funky old school type hip hop instrumental that sees Motzzi and Chronikal ride the beat quite brilliantly with nice flows, a kick back sort of song. The said tracks are some of the strongest and banging beats on the mixtape, and also some of my favourites.
To top off the mixtape, it features the Haterproof logo, the label to which Chronikal is signed, letting everyone know who she is with and repping, and also is Haterproof putting their stamp of approval on it in a way. Download the mixtape for free right now and let us know your thoughts . . .

• SHOWING POTENTIAL – Chronikal shows her potential on “The Chronik” mixtape, she is a diverse emcee, with a lot of hot lyrics to serve up, if she tightens up her flow she could step to the next level and become not only one of the best femcee’s but one of the best emcee’s in the uk period . . .
