Esskimo Cold – The Man With The Metal Face
Welsh Hip Hop artist Esskimo Cold released a brand new mixtape last month called “The Man With The Metal Face”. The mixtape features some emotional as well as some up-lifting Hip Hop which chronicles Esskimo Cold aka Smokin Dan’s struggles in life, from trying to make his music in to career, capturing his dreams whilst also being broke, feeling all alone. Esskimo Cold also turns negatives in to positives, taking his experiences and putting them on paper, in some of the later tracks on the mixtape, he realises his worth and how blessed he is, and that he has got the music, to put in the work to get where he wants. Featuring laid-back Lounge Hip Hop production, as well as some old-skool East Coast Hip Hop, the mixtape is varied in style, showcasing all sides of Esskimo as well as his excellent song-writing and lyricism. I particularly like “Maybe Tomorrow” which superbly samples the Stereophonic’s track of the same name, featuring Esskimo Cold rhyming about looking to a brighter day, reflecting on the past, shouting out all of his friends past and present, either locked up or stuck in the deep as he puts it, and finally getting paid from music. “Before It’s Too Late” is a song which features Esskimo spitting of pain and sorrow, and the hook is written perfectly. “That Time” is a more up-tempo Hip Hop track in which Esskimo Cold realises his own talent, stating music to be the only option, taking the spot from anyone laying down, grabbing his opportunities, brilliant effortless flow on the beat.
