Base Defence League’s leader, Grime MC Big Narstie stepped up in the BBC Radio 1Xtra building recently to join DJ Cameo on his UKG show for #GimmeGrime freestyle. Going in lyrically on deep, atmospheric, base-orientated Grime instrumental, with equally deep lyricism, Narstie drops smoothly executed punchlines, highlighting his elite lyrical skills, having the power within his music to make the crowds mosh, and “send a pretty girl to the hospice”. As it sit here listening to Big Narstie go in, I can’t help have respect for the guy, his lyrics touching a nerve, thinking about how far Big Narstie has come, putting in the grind and doing his own thing to create his own empire in Dice Recordings, not to mention bringing base the forefront. Big Narstie goes on in a few Grime beats, as expected, dropping heavyweight bars, switching up the flows, even slipping in to spanish language. Laying down bars about weed, girls, skanking, clubbing, gassing out the raves, and bringing the pain in his bars only way he can.
