Grim Sickers feat. Ghetts & The Darker The Shadow The Brighter The Light – “Open The Till”
Grim Sickers has cemented his place in the Grime scene as one of the most unconventional MC’s and with a distinctive voice. He released the monstrous ‘Kane’ late last year, produced by Warner-Chappell signee Swifta Beater and featuring Boy Better Know’s CEO JME, and was also released on The Streets’ legendary frontman Mike Skinner’s label. This was the track which catapulted on to every Grime playlist in the land, hitting radio playlists from Kiss FM to BBC Radio 1Xtra and has shut down every festival and rave from the UK to the Czech Republic ever since. There was even a remix along with P Money, Jaykae, Kurupt FM, President T and Funky Dee.
Grim Sickers intends to top that tune with his new joint entitled ‘Open The Till’, which not only brings through well-respected Grime MC Ghetts, but is the return to the mic for Mike Skinner, who now goes under the moniker of ‘Darker The Shadow’. The result is a storm of energy, a banger of a riddim that is perfect for the trio, as Mike Skinner produces a dark, bassy and merky beat that suits Ghetts, but brash and bouncy in favour of Grim Sickers, with melodic Garage undertones for Darker The Shadow. Grim Sickers delivers a knockout hook that is catchy, with Darker The Shadow adding the final touch with the punchline. Ghetts opens up with the first verse that is gritty and witty, and Sickers and Darker The Shadow bounce along on the final two verses. The trio showcase their lyrical prowess that is bold and witty.
Talking about the record and how the extraordinary collaboration came about, Mike Skinner says: “Open the Till Is a big moment for me, I’ve never featured on someone else’s record before. I’ve been working with Grim for a while since I signed KANE, and so we’ve been in studio’s a lot, mainly talking about chicken wings.
Watching Ghetts record his verse was seriously a career nightlight for me. It was fully Jay-Z Rain Man, sitting on his own with no pen or pad, and then of course performing it in the booth like he’d been singing it his whole career. Anyway at the end of that we were left with a gap at the end of the song and I thought, if I don’t sing on this song, I will regret not being on the same song as these two for the rest of my life”.
The video is shot on location in Ibiza and Oxford St, with scenes seemingly inspired by Breaking Bad, as Grim Sickers and Darker The Shadow rolling around in an RV. Ghetts appears on his verse, and scenes filmed in a rave are also interspersed. The track premiered on the radio with DJ Target on BBC Radio 1Xtra, and is already on the Songs Of The Week playlist in Brazil/Portugal and No.5 on the ‘Grime Shutdown’ playlist, the biggest Grime playlist (both on Spotify). It’s also had a massive co-sign from Annie Mac, Kurupt FM, Mistajam and many more!
