HERBAL T – HIP HOP EMPEROR EP
UK Hip Hop artist Herbal T recently unveiled his brand new album, ‘Hip Hop Emperor’ EP, distributed by Def Jam Records, Herbal T explaining himself that the reason for the title is his love of Hip Hop, as his energy is like an emperor. Herbal T’s lyricism on the album is certainly grand, the rapper coming across as poetical with his lyrical content, and intellectual. The first track on the album is ‘Stone City’, a wavey, atmospheric tribal sort of production, lyrics depicting his strength in hard times, honouring his own code that he stands by. ‘Euphoric’ is another track, in which Herbal T rhymes about natures forces, as well as going scientific, in order to emphasise that he will be long standing in the Hip Hop game, becoming more wise and having self-belief, whilst away from music, on road, he has the swagger and the street wise mentality.
A track that I like personally was ‘Sun Dial’, in which Herbal T addresses the robotic community as it were, where everybody goes about their day, going to work, slaving away and being controlled by government, whereas Herbal T chooses to be free, not conforming but living with his own creative mind, not being brainwashed. Another track which is emotional, and speaks wisdom is ‘Word To The Youth’ featuring fellow Hip Hop rapper Big Cakes, and samples the soundtrack of ‘Gladiator’ if I’m not mistaken, where Herbal T especially rhymes about having to educate the youth to stay away from negativity, feed your mind with knowledge, stay open-minded and not get pulled under by media, whilst Big Cakes speaks of showing love, even though we are hated on. The hook is well wrote, but straight to the point.
Herbal T never glorifies violence in his lyrics, but a track that does get bloody and messy lyrically is ‘Eye Of Goku’, in which Herbz spits over a fiery Hip Hop beat, taking it to the future with martial arts-influenced bars, putting himself in a world of demons, kings, emperors and robots fighting, whilst he fights the system to stay free. Terrific subject matter and showcases Herbal T’s creativity and song craft.
The last track on the EP, ‘Flow The Nile Through London’ features L.Don, both artists taking you on a journey through London, from the state of the streets, many moving shady, everyone out for their own gain, Herbal T urging people to fix up. L.Don’s delivery on the track is raw and rugged, but he flows effortlessly, also rhyming about London, referring to it as the Jungle, having to keep your guard up as you could be killed, wishing for change. A deep track, deep production!
The album on the whole is cohesive, many of the tracks dealing with similar subjects but nevertheless differing, and the album has a running theme, of which Herbal T brings to life in his lyrics, speaking of a city full of demons, emperors such as himself, and a broken down society which is fighting. Herbal T’s song writing achieves that perfectly, as for the production, it fits Herbal T’s style and the theme for that matter, giving the album a grand feeling, and Herbal T lyrical skills, flow and delivery on the whole is top-notch and I can see with the great Hip Hop legends such as Wu-Tang, Nas and many more.
