Jay Carteré – Anything EP

Producer, Rapper, Singer, enthusiastic blogger and writer, JCMpire founder Jay Carteré releases his latest project “Anything” EP which follows up last year’s experimental Dance EP “Love Story”. Jay continues to expand his musical horizons and prove his versatility. This new 8-track EP features ‘Drug Music’, just one of an entire collection produced entirely by Jay Carteré himself. ‘Drug Music’ is an infectious Trap banger on which Jay gets turnt up lyrically. ‘Box’ is yet another hard-edged electronic, trapesque rap banger from Jay, the track being a double meaning for his side hustle and the boxes he is placed in both metaphorically and, hopefully not, physically.
Jay Carteré’s creative song writing capabilities take the forefront on ‘Natural Phenomenon’, one of many tracks on the EP that further display Jay’s versatility. Jay delivers smooth lyrics packed with metaphors and similes over an equally elegant yet booming beat and dreamy-like, haunting melody. The song is a love note to his love interest, stating a storm is approaching, a metaphor amongst other cold, wintry references to emphasize her natural beauty. On the flipside to this love song, ‘Anything Interlude’ is a much harsher display of lyrics from Jay on a bass-heavy Trap beat, emphasizing a lack of love unless you are progressing on to better things as Jay states.

Whilst ‘Natural Phenomenon’ puts a woman, seemingly elegance and sophistication, on a pedestal so to speak, Jay Carteré rhymes about his ability or urge to turn a good girl bad on ‘Good Girl’. Jay spits on a sauntering, bass-laden instrumental, delivering distorted vocals on the chorus. Not the last time Jay turns to distortion of his voice on the second and last interlude ‘Fuck Interlude’, which is lethargic trip in my opinion owing to a slow, ambient beat. ‘Naked’ revisits Jay’s love for a woman of impeccable beauty. Though this one is more vivid and steamier! The final track ‘10,000 Hours’ combines ambient melody and ultra trap elements, 808 bass and snares, as Jay rhymes about his tendency to make a woman work for him after putting in the workload himself.
Jay Carteré seems to have fused some musical teachings or ideas from previous EP’s and mixtapes to create a more rounded offering with this EP. Visiting the Rap genre from a street level and then turning to a sweeter side of his personality with love songs, Jay is consistent in delivering lyrics that show off his wordplay skills. Jay Carteré also produces the entire EP himself, which is of a high standard. Jay Carteré for me is a show and example of the independent cutting out the middle man when he creates his music, and it seems he is also building a strong empire that will likely stand on it’s own as an independent, with Jay also becoming a familiar online presence on social media.
