Jay Carteré – The Love Story EP
Jay Carteré has finally released his latest project, a Dance EP entitled ‘The Love Story’, featuring seven rhythmic dance tunes, all produced by Jay himself. The project stems from Jay’s newly found love of dance music in 2013, in which he was ‘mesmerized by the catchy synth lines and infectious melodies of dance music’. This may have been some what of a surprise for his fans, as it followed on from his 5th rap mixtape ‘Caesar Augustus’, but this awesome collection of Dance tracks, which are ‘high energy dance tracks infused with pop sensibilities’, will impress and appeal to both hardcore and casual fans of the dance genre.
‘The Love Story’ EP takes the listener on a seven-track journey as Jay Carteré unravels a love story that transcends the main theme of the EP and seeps in to Jay’s own love affair and dabbling in the Dance genre. Kicking off with ‘The Night’, Jay delivers minimal vocals, although incorporates an infectious hook over a rhythmic dance production, creating a vivid picture for the listener of a night out on the town, with the pulsating synths bringing flashing lights and strobes to mind. The build ups in the instrumental are precise and give you just a taste of Jay’s growing skills in producing well crafted, catchy Dance tunes. With the iTunes order, you get the bonus track, an extended version of ‘The Night’.
The EP moves on to ‘I Wanna’, which in stark contrast to ‘The Night’, has more vocals, as Jay maps out his plans for a Saturday night, wanting to get lost in the moment of drinking, and not worrying about any major relationships. Once again, Jay concocts a well written chorus which is as infectious as the pulsating, thumping beat.
After the initial madness and aimless partying, Jay Carteré expresses his desire to have someone he can love on ‘Turn The Lights Down’, then smoothly takes you in to ‘Lighthouse’ which is an ambient, melodious metaphor for how he perceives his lover, also blending dance production with rap lyrics, in which Jay hopes for the happiness to never end.
The love relationship starts to take a downward spiral on ‘Right Now’, another crisp dance production from Jay, with him laying down smooth vocals which blend in with the beat. Jay tells the story of two lovers drifting apart, with the arrangement and placement of the chorus almost symbolizing the distance between the two, as well as the distortion and the echoes on the vocals also building the feeling of slipping away.
The mood of the EP shifts on ‘Scream My Name’, with a more downbeat Dance instrumental in the start, as Jay pleads his worth to his lover, arguing that she won’t find another like him, yet the tune takes an uplifting turn at the chorus. Jay mixes smooth, silky singing, which captures the pain, with more rap lyrics, rhyming about the non-stop arguments which he and his woman experience. Jay saves most of the heartache for a ballad depicting the heartbreak, as he sings about getting back at his ex through making her jealous, in order to get over her. Jay delivers a verse in which he boasts of being able to pick up any girl he so wishes, whilst drowning his sorrows.
This EP has furthered Jay Carteré’s musical abilities such as song writing and song craft, as Jay has delivered a themed project with a coherent story, with each track exploring different aspects of a love relationship, and more in depth, each song has it’s verses and choruses. Jay has also displayed his versatility in music production, stepping away from rap and producing not one but seven dance tracks, rich in synths and those infectious melodies that Jay first fell in love with. The production is quality, and the music that Jay has produced locks in to the dance genre, going for energetic beats, and stripping away in-depth lyricism in favour of infectious vocals, with the few exceptions. In my opinion, this is a truly remarkable debut in the Dance scene for Jay, and if he were to cross over in to the genre from time to time, he would be more of a versatile artist and could maybe make a breakthrough to the mainstream, and who knows, even the charts!
