Sonny – Interview
Introduce yourself, and describe your musical style?
Whats up with you bruh, Nasaan, straight out of Detroit. Hmm I would say my style of music is eclectic with out boxing myself in, you get me?
Tell us something random about yourself?
I can kick flip over Siete’s grandma. Steezy.
Apart from your yet to be released project, you have a track called ‘Menace’ on your soundcloud, can you tell us about that track?
Yeah, its like my second song I released on Soundcloud, I deleted the first one, it wasn’t bearable dude, at least by my ears. Ive actually grown out of menace too, I feel I’m like way, way, better than that in a lyrical and conceptual aspect, only reason I can still listen to Menace is because even though I wasn’t as good of a lyricist compared to now, I still incorporated concepts and messages through out my art. Menace might sound like “just another cool song” but its beyond that. Its actually about society and how the people within tend to negate or categorize a person based on little things like interest or appearance which sucks to me. Nobody would probably ever know if i didn’t tell, Id probably be able to articulate that better now though. Way better.
Did you start making music around the time of ‘Menace’? What was your motivation to venture in to music?
Yeah,2012, a year prior actually. I’m just going to come clean and say all that shit sucked man. I was just starting off though, don’t throw shots bruh, have to meet up and run one, nah I’m playing. Motivations ranged as far as my Grandma, rest up, to Lil Wayne to A childhood friend of mine, Damontez. Not only did bruh aspire me to do music, he saved my life like literally.
Who would you say your main influences are, or your inspiration in the music scene?
Hm, Top Five: Kendrick, Rocky, Drake, Chance, and…. Man, I got way too many fifth mans in the book bruh, don’t want nobody at my neck if I pick wrong. Just Started fighting grandmas too, nah kidding let me chill before they start running up on me mobbin’ for real.
What are your earliest musical memories?
Free-styling with Damontez any and every where for no reason or just Sitting in Stones basement, whose a label mate of mine, either messing around, making his ass mad, or recording the worse shit ever, I cant stress how horrible we WERE man.You know, its like looking back at your middle school pictures on Facebook or something and thinking like “damn, I was sooo ugly”.
You are the son of the late rapper Proof, one sixth of D12 and childhood friend of Eminem. What are your memories of your dad and his musical career?
Aw man look, I remember he was on tour and me, and my dumb ass brother was jumping off the balcony of the second floor of our house into the living room right? Mind you he told us, and I quote “Step foot in the living room, and ima whoop yo ass”, so we were bucking super heavy. So we’re jumping off the balcony on to these expensive ass pillows and whatever, and in mid air I hear “ Yooooo!”, I fall on the pillows and look at the front door, just ready to get my ass kicked, he comes over, ties my shoes and leave, Shocked. I Also remember him, me, and some guy in a car and hes playing his music or whatever, and guys “ You like that Poppy” thats my childhood name chill don’t call me it, I hate it.
Was your dad’s legacy a major influence in your decision to pursue a rap career?
No. This is the million dollar question, Glad you asked. I tend not to embrace our relationship out side of him being my dad. Reason being is I’d hate to be overlooked due to his success and be boxed in and live in his shadow forever, I look at all these other kids who had a famous rapper for a dad and tries to pursue the same career but cant because every interview or blog or song is [Such and Such Son] which sucks because they cant make a name for them self and showcase there talent. I don’t do what I do to be known as Proof’s son on everything. To say the least, if you only care for me because my dad please: Unfollow me, Unlike my Music, Don’t read my interviews, don’t interview me, and hate me because I’m not here to Glorify my dad all day and run with his name to get where I want, I even rejected help from my Uncle Em (Eminem) because I want to come up genuine and do it how they did it, no help or cheat codes. I want this for me and I’m sure he does too. And this is not to come off a dick I love my old man ha. Well as long as he understands I’m cool I guess.
Do you find yourself listening back to your dad’s music. Do you have a favourite Proof song?
At times, It makes me cry though, yes, the big tough guy crying, but I Like Girls Wit The Boom, and Kurt Kobain the most.
Moving on to your forthcoming EP, tell us about the project, and can we expect any previews?
My Project, much like Menace, Entitled “Testing: Waters”is an 7 song EP based on acceptance. I see it as just a test to see if the world likes me, hence the title, I have a mixtape after that titled Abstract, but shh. That’s the real, real guy. Ill speak more on the art when I release it, and yes sir, I plan on releasing 2 songs off the project.
Are there any collabs in the pipeline, for this project or otherwise?
Bookie, Kuniva, and fellow label mates.
Interestingly you have worked with D12’s Kuniva, but also have a feature with Kid Bookie here in London. How did that come about?
How the fuck did that happen? To be completely honest I don’t even remember. Hes so cool though man his energy is amazing, I’m a fan most def. Damn I’m about to be thinking all day on how that happen. Look what you did dude.
Who would you like to collaborate with in the future that you may not have yet?
Hard to say, because I pick collabs based on the energy of the song, and whose sound would match the best if needed, I don’t just take or grab features because a name, or what it could do for me.
What are your top 3 tunes at the moment?
Maroon V: This Songs Going To Hurt Like A Motherfucker
Jose Guapo: Rick Owens
Dej Loaf: Back Up
Man I love the Back UP joint so much, I’m putting a verse on it asap, it has a super Detroit feel, I love it.
