Squintz – No! Ft. Duppy & Renz – [Nuen Ain’t Gang]
Mobset’s Squintz, out of North London, continues to appease his fans with the release of new visuals for ‘No!’, taken from his debut project, ‘Nuen Ain’t Gang’, which has already garnered support from Complex Mag, GRM Daily, Keepin It Grimy, and Squintz’s 2021 single ‘No Handouts’ was also added to YouTube’s Underground Grime playlist.
‘No!’ is produced by frequent collaborator Duppy, as well as featuring both Renz (Mobset) and Duppy on vocals. The production is energetic, a concoction of war-like horns, lively percussion and a grimy bassline, with all three emcee’s attacking the beat with ferociousness, fast-paced flows and assertive lyrics. Squintz, Duppy and Renz deliver bars intent on parring any emcee’s who dare to step them for a clash, showing no fear and setting the levels to aim for, even rejecting those that aren’t worth the time. The well-written hook is blunt and to the point, and is catchy enough, that it would go down well with a crowd.
‘No!’ is a continuation of a project that embodies the urban culture, and Squintz’s experiences of living in a concrete jungle surrounded by a concrete city. The overall sound stays true to the essence of Grime from the early days, evocative of the pirate radio era, with the notion running throughout that it’s alright to be yourself when you are from a similar background.
The visuals for ‘No!’, shot by Travs, reflect the gritty, organic environment that classic clashes have occurred, with the artists taking to the roads, concrete buildings as the backdrop, and what better place to be for a clash than at the the dungeon, the legendary Lord Of The Mics basement. Squintz and co deliver a performance of the song that is high on energy.
‘Nuen Ain’t Gang’ marks a monumental moment in Squintz’s music journey, signifying the start of his dedication to his craft and the imminent accolades that come with the hard work and consistency that Squintz has shown with his latest release schedule. He even released a remix of Digga D’s most recent hit ‘2K17’, called ‘2K21’ (What’s The Point?), and featured on ‘Doomsday’ by Bradz On Mic, also featuring Renz.
Squintz was part of a Grime set for BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Sir Spyro earlier this year, along with Duppy, J.P and Renz, which is on the verge of reaching 10k views. Squintz’s video for ‘Dem Man’, featuring Jammer (BBK) and Scrufizzer, was released on his own YouTube channel, and is near to 15k views. Often popping up on radio stations such as London-based Reprezent Radio and Pyro Radio, Squintz is very much a part of the new generation of Grime artists, and the resurgence of the Grime radio culture in recent years, taking it as an opportunity to hone their skills via practice sessions. Just last month, Squintz appeared on DJ Charisma’s Reprezent show alongside Renz and Duppy, check out that set here.
With an abundance of skills that Squintz displays in his raw and gritty sound, and relatable lyrical content that mirror his own reality, Squintz proves that being yourself, consistency and work rate go along way to put you on course to achieve success, although natural skill plays a part also. Squintz is no where near wrapped up this side of 2022, and we expect and are excited to see what else he releases. This momentum will propel Squintz into next year, undoubtedly placing him at the forefront of Grime emcee’s emerging at the moment.
