Squintz – PURPLE [Mixtape]

Squintz is back with a new mixtape, ‘PURPLE’, following up his debut project ‘Nuen Ain’t Gang’, which has already hit 10k streams, with the video for ‘Dem Man’, featuring Jammer and Scrufizzer, hitting 13k views.

‘PURPLE’ is an eight-track collection of fresh tunes from Squintz, recorded in the last few weeks, that further elaborates on his musical journey and his navigation around the environment that he hails from. However, the opening track ‘One Of Those Guys’, a remix of Unkown T’s recent single ‘Tugman Vacation’, sets a different tone. A more pensive Squintz delivers lyrics that explore a sort of inner-conflict, keeping his guards up and keeping up a tough guy persona, an affect of his surroundings, rather than letting down his guards and embracing love, perhaps due to a lack of trust and fake love.

Squintz continues the Drill vibes on ‘Just My Friend’, a melodic drill love song, on which he expresses his love and feelings for a special girl, a one time friend that is now much more. Squintz’s lyricism and wordplay illustrate various sensual encounters between himself and his girl. ‘London’s Falling (Down)’ is another contemplative song, with Squintz taking to a mellow Drill beat, as he rhymes about the conflict of interest, of having to get himself up everyday for work, to earn his money and provide for his family and pay off bills and debts. Yet he feels his calling is as a musician, to eventually work for himself. The conviction with which Squintz spits his bars, coupled with the sombre production evoke a sense of sorrow, yet somehow a glimmer of hope and motivation.

‘What’s Worse’ further explores Squintz’s situation. Taking to a heavy-hitting instrumental, Squintz vigorously sprays clever lyrics with one line flows, and a catchy hook too, referring to the “early bird catches the worm” metaphor to convey that rather than sitting around ruing his circumstances, he’d rather be working on improving himself, giving him the upper hand against competition, and a better chance of success.

‘Who Are You’ sees Squintz drop a remix of a Grime classic by Chip, spraying straight rapid fire, displaying his lyrical prowess, powerful delivery and range of flows. He even writes his own hook, confidently and boldly stating that he carries himself like an older rather than a new gen. Energetic, boastful and plenty of pars from Squintz who always flourishes on 140bpm. Squintz follows this up with a remix of Digga D’s recent single ‘2K17’. ‘What’s The Point? (2K21)’ features breath-taking, energetic flows from Squintz on the rhythmic production, with a memorable chorus that assists in putting a fresh spin on the song. Squintz laments how society is nowadays, where everyone is out for themselves, whilst he continues to do favours for others, but the sentiment isn’t reciprocated. ‘The Source’ is a deep emotive Hip Hop track from SQ, delivering sauntering, flowing lyrics, that explore the low times in his life, exhausted and mentally drained from the stresses of persistence and consistency. Squintz, channeling his pain and anguish into his bars, looks back on his past self, realizing his self-worth and knowing that it will be all worth it.

Overall, ‘PURPLE’ is a project from an unreserved Squintz, delivering an intimate, candid and sincere account of such topics as mental health and environmental struggles, delving into love and relationships, and his endeavours as an artist. The lyrical content is relatable, and Squintz keeps the same authenticity displayed on previous work, whilst showcasing more of the same undeniable skills encompassing his captivating lyricism, flow and delivery. Squintz proves that beyond all doubt, he is not just a Grime MC but a musician who is capable of venturing into other genres including Drill and Rap/Hip Hop.

Squintz continues to evolve with the his latest release, continuing his unrelenting work ethic and consistency. He has already been supported by renowned platforms such as Complex Mag, Keepin It Grimy, GRM Daily, and has been added to YouTube’s Underground Grime playlist. Radio stations and DJ’s that have showed their support include Sir Spyro at BBC Radio 1Xtra, Charisma of Reprezent Radio and Pyro Radio. Those same radio stations have been the hub on which Squintz has showcased his barring skills, with the most recent being a stand-out Sir Spyro Grime set alongside Duppy, J.P and Renz.
