Andy Sargeant MC – Metamorphosis Vol. 1

Portsmouth-based Hip Hop artist Andy Sargeant MC released ‘Metamorphosis Vol. 1’ earlier this month, featuring production from fellow Portsmouth musicians, Arca Teck and Parv of The Bar Staff. The title track, a soulful sampled Hip Hop track, displays Andy’s wordplay skills, as he intends to instil fear in competition with his superior rhymes, and also lays down his perspective on the wrongs in today’s society.
The Bar Staff’s Parv lends some original production on the mellow, emotional love story entitled ‘Truly Are’, in which Andy expresses his love for his girlfriend and his child, expressing his unconditional love for them via a range of clever metaphors, placing them above his music. The track features a high-pitched sung chorus that brings more emotion.
Andy Sargeant creeps on the beat with precise flow on ‘Much Too Much’, depicting his mind state when it comes to taking care of mc’s, describing them as vile, seemingly taking on the role of a killer with his pen. Another track which Andy delivers like-minded bars is on ‘Shake The Scene’, an intense, horror-style production, over which Andy states his intention to shake the scene with his mixtape, and warning competition hos they can served as he takes on the role of a vigilante.
‘Playtime’ produced by Pee Double features lyricism from Andy Sargeant as rhymes about his humble beginnings starting out as a rapper, taking his climb to stardom as a sport, as he makes references to a marathon and wrestling. Andy shows off superb song writing skills on the hook, as well as solid flows over the game-themed synths and banging production.
‘Carlsberg Rapper’ makes use of Andy Sargeant’s wordplay skills, likening himself to a top of the range beverage, due to his free-flowing flows and bitter lyricism no doubt, and he expresses his proud British heritage. Andy delivers varying flows, quickening his flow here and there over a beat that incorporates a sea shanty style instrument in to the melody, adding a staggering, drunken vibe.
Arca Teck lends his production skills to a couple of tracks, including ‘Peace Of Mind’, the Hip Hop production, consisting of intense, melancholy piano keys and thumping beat, brings out a certain aggressiveness in Andy, as he furiously attacks rappers once again, delivering heavyweight punchlines, like stating he’d ‘eat rappers for breakfast’, changing his mood on the chorus, as he states he must focus on positivity rather than negativity. ‘Unsung Hero’ is another deep, saddening track produced by Arca Teck, on which Andy rhymes about his Aunt, an unsung hero that gave everything for nothing, a selfless person, as Andy pours his heart out, regretting the times he didn’t get to share and wishing he had more time. The chorus delivers a message that life is a lesson, resulting in death teaching us.
Andy Sargeant delivers a superb mixtape here, in which Andy puts his thoughts and feelings on to track with some rather deepening tunes which are well crafted and thought out, and then he can turn around on another track and showcase yet more creative lyrical skills through his wordplay, particularly when it comes to showing up competition. Andy does well with his flow and delivery, suiting some rather soulful, nevertheless old school style Hip Hop production. A good foundation to kick on from with the first volume in the Metamorphosis series. Purchase your copy of the mixtape below and leave us your thoughts and opinions in the comments section . . .
