The New Blxck – The Night Is Dark And Im Far From Home

Hip Hop collective The New Blxck, known for tackling racial issues and their social commentary, recently released their latest project ‘The Night Is Dark And Im Far From Home’. Just from the prelude, a tense introduction featuring snippets from a police fiasco set to a soulful, gospel style.
Tracks like ‘Rain on the Mind’ to ‘Home’ take you on lyrical journey of their duo’s hometown, the former a bleak reminder of how any crime scene you pass may have an impact on you. The lyrics are set to chilling, trickling piano keys which builds the intensity of the story.
The New Blxck include vast instrumentation in their music, most notably pianos and elements of Jazz that sometimes brings, combined with the lyrics, a poignant feeling. ‘Liberation Through Rhyme’ exemplifies that production, a chilled out yet banging beat, with lyrics that delve in to the dangers of survival in the gritty cities, the stresses of everyday life and living life on the edge that seep in to the duo’s rhymes, hence liberating themselves via music.
‘They Say’ is a humbling track, featuring rather soulful R&B vibes provided by the singer on the hook, the lyricists revealing that unlike those unwilling to put in work, they will be successful through self-belief, pure talent and graft, and staying true to themselves. ‘Journey Thus Far’ is a reminiscent journey of The New Blxck’s life thus far, with much drama whether good or bad. The events no doubt have shaped them as people and taught them lessons. ‘It’s Your World’ is an atmospheric Hip Hop production with a deep message to those that really want something, to go and get it for the world is yours and you must take it, just like they say in this chorus, ‘if you owe me ten pounds, you ain’t giving me nine’, never settle for less.
The New Blxck deliver more humbling tunes, or instance, ‘What Keeps Me Going’, a reflection of their rocky journey to get where they are, feeling blessed for the opportunity, as well as revealing what has got them by those hard times. The production for this track is incredible, with thrashing drums, a melody overwhelming with sadness, and a slow plodding beat, all of which incorporates Jazz, Rock and Hip Hop, and would be great live.
The Jazz elements return to the production on ‘Let’s Get Money’, the saxophone and organs and rhythmic piano keys that also add a Gospel vibe. The motivating lyrics from the duo depict their ambition and perseverance to get paid. One particular track that caught my attention is ‘Before Sunrise’, a rather long track that features skits within the song, and is a short musical story following an interaction between a guy and woman who are attracted, yet previous relationships or expectations make the girl stand-offish in the beginning. The man tries to plead his case that not all men are the same, and the two start to seem to connect with each other and hit it off. A revealing story that shows that both the man and woman in a relationship sometimes need to open up and both seem to want the same thing or have the same problem with advancing. A video for this would be epic.
The New Blxck serve up another impressive project, the production is top-notch and varied, taking you through many genres music, displaying The New Blxck’s eclectic taste in music, and they showcase a range of flows, unique delivery, and profound lyricism.
