Esskay – White Noise
Esskay unveils what may be one of the most anticipated albums in the Urban Grime and Hip Hop scene of late, White Noise, featuring massive lead singles “Mr. Tramp”, “Waves”, “iTravel” and “Nebula”. White Noise gives an introspective and deeper look in to the life and explores the mind-state of Esskay, coming from a musicians perspective as well as Esskay offering his own outlook on society and the world.
Esskay presents himself as a social misfit, an outcast, and as he puts himself into the shoes of a homeless person on “Mr. Tramp”, he reveals that just like himself, you get looked at differently. And as an artist, on “Waves”, Esskay goes as far as to compare his music to waves flooding an industry that has locked him out. Esskay provides God-like lyrics on “iTravel”, offering an alternative, more peaceful universe, one that his music has the potential to deliver and bring about. Esskay elaborates on his ideas of peace and tranquillity on “Nebula”, rhyming about how he perceives a normal day for himself, talking of getting drunk and smoking weed whilst taking in the walking in his own wonderland full of leaves. There is a contrast between the world he strives for and his thought process and what he gets up to of a daily, which is similar to ‘Beautiful Anger’, where Esskay labels his anger as beautiful, embracing the fury and rage.
A depressing mind-state, unstable mind-state kicks in on such tracks as “Drowning” featuring TruOmega, where Esskay describes his life as like being on-board a ship on rocky seas. TruOmega provides a grand chorus, displaying amazing harmonic vocals. Both Esskay and TruOmega collaborate again on “The Room”, which Esskay rhymes over a fusion of tight Rock drums and Hip Hop beat. The lyrics convey feelings of loneliness, inviting the listener into a dark, cold room, in which the artists become a recluse when writing and producing music. White Noise also has a feature from Scrufizzer and Byron, both on a track called “Radio”, a slow and ambient Grime production with double time flow from Scrufizzer, the lyrics depict the trios desire to grace the radio airwaves, boasting of proven talent and a history on radio, to the point that they must feel like their time is overdue.
White Noise also blends both Grime and Hip Hop elements into the production, never boxed into one particular genre, but could be described as matured Grime sound. Many of the tracks have ambient melodies and with rumbling bassline, like “Waves”, “iTravel” or “Mr. Tramp”, then there is “Bury Me Alive”, a warped electric Grime production, with clanging percussion and a banging beat, one that Esskay displays a consistent, on-point flow on the alternating beat. Another track with a thudding beat is “Beautiful Anger”, but with a light guitar riff as the melody. The bonus track “How Far We’ve Gone” even incorporates Drum & Bass.
Overall, Esskay’s direction on this album is clear, and the lyrics convey a scattered mind that Esskay presumably has. His extensive lyrical ability complements his style, seeming like his thoughts are spilling out, spontaneously sometimes, but then he can deliver sauntering flows as if he is speaking his thoughts aloud.
