Certified Blood & Family present ‘Life (The Mixtape)’, from Nottingham Rapper Fonzse. The general direction and theme of the mixtape is Fonzse’s own introspection and perspective as each song takes a look at a different aspect of his life. Tracks like ‘Outta Here’ and ‘Feels Like’ celebrate the good times in life, with the latter featuring Lumber Jack, both lyricists rhyming to a rhythmic, feel good Hip Hop instrumental. Fonzse links up with fellow rapper Omie Omz, with the stand out track for me being ‘Fix Up Or Break Down’, a heavyweight Trap banger and one of many that depicts a way of life for Fonzse and co, stepping out on the roads to make their money by any means necessary. ‘Track’ is a positive collabo between Fonzse and Omie, and with a fantastic and quite catchy hook, the two deliver lyrics that convey their self-assurance that they are on the right track to success. Other notable tracks are ‘Mr Miyagi’ also featuring Jammy and Poet, and features many references to The Karate Kid film series, with the trio likening themselves to Mr Miyagi, arriving to teach the young ones, the Danielsons, and emphasizing that they have come to win. ‘Whats Life’ features lyrics from Fonzse in which he questions what the purpose and meaning of life is, noting much events in his life that have brought the question about. One other song which particularly stands out is ‘Seasons’, a soulfully sampled Hip Hop tune that again showcases the contrasting styles of production that Fonzse can take to. Fonzse lays down smooth flows and bars as he ponders on the type of woman he wants in his life, a woman for all seasons as he states, that he can come home to and can cook, but also independent and career woman it seems, as he mentions that she may be working.
Fonzse delivers a truly remarkable Hip Hop mixtape to kick off the new year, with much of the production varying in different styles of Hip Hop, Fonzse also brings a broad range of aspects of his life on to the mixtape. Whilst in my opinion, his flow needs a bit of work, the lyricism and potential for improvement is there.
