Following the departure of Lady Shocker (formerly Wolf Pack) and Jon E Clayface (Wave Gang) to focus on their own solo careers, the remaining members of Grime collective Grm Skl; Snoopa, Ikue, Ashcroft and Pupps release 11 track E.P entitled “The Assignment” which is the epitome of Grime. As a debut release, this project sets the levels high for all other competitors.
Stand out tracks include ‘Spray That Again’ produced by Kenny D and which features the whole of Grm Skl in a 16 bar rally with reload bars, one line flows, you name it . . .. this one has an old school/new school skippy vibe to it too. Snoopa, Lady Shocker and Pupps are joined by Ten Dixon for ‘Taking Out Eyeballs’, an orchestral grime destruction that is nothing but calm. The four remaining mc’s as well as Jon E Clayface, with the ‘Oblivious’ CREEP N00M Remix, have their own solo tracks, such as Ikue’s skippy Gravity-produced ‘Computers’ which is a showcase of his song writing skills, laying down a catchy hook and dumping fast-paced, energetic bars on the beat that display his mic skills. Ashcroft takes on a Mace production which is reminiscent of Wiley’s early beats. He lets us all know what grinds his gears, from Politics to Internet gangstas, ignorant people and tightwads and so on. Also worth mentioning is the anthem ‘Grime’ Czech Producer Dryman, featuring fellow Czech artists Gumbgu, Barenz of Plastic Riderz and Tchagun alongside some of Grm Skl.
Overall, this is grimy, energetic, hype, heavyweight release from the super-crew that is Grm Skl, with a mix of crew, solo and collaboration tracks between the the crew, alternating combinations of artists working together in the name of music, more specifically the Grime Scene.
