LL Cool J “Mama Said Knock You Out” DefJam30 Producer Remix Battle @ The Jump Off
To mark the 30th anniversary of Def Jam Recordings, Jump Off teamed up with one of the most influential labels to help celebrate the longevity, which subsequently took place on the day of the Notting Hill Carnival. The event turned out to be the mother of all after parties, with an epic rap battle, breaking and twerking and one of the highlights being the Producer battle where two budding talents faced off, this time remixing samples from one of Def Jam’s classic tracks. Producers Josiah and BeatNik remix LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” before a live audience at the “Def Jam 30th Anniversary Jump Off Special”. Both producers go head to head, fully focused and concentrating on their remix of the classic Hip Hop track, Josiah going for a slow building piano-led, tingling and techy melody with a groovy Hip Hop beat pattern, whilst BeatNik opts for a banging Hip Hop beat, with a melody consisting of horns rather than a piano. The crowd were largely rooting for Josiah over BeatNik, justified considering he took the beat so far from the original, more laid back and a calm, although BeatNik’s remix was quality, both were top-notch and in my opinion, the decision could have gone either way depending on the mood of the crowd.
